ARCADIA  A fewmonthsbefore the doorsopenedforthe inaugural BreedersCupatHollywood
Park onNovember10, 1984, the doorsopenedforWinnersFoundationwhich,like the Breeders
Cup,continuesworkinguninterruptedtothisday. But unlike the BreedersCup,which
celebratestwodaysa year,the workof the WinnersFoundationislargelyuncelebrated365
daysa year,often24 hours a day as the Foundationcontinuallyassiststhose whoworkwithand
care for the horsesandthe racetracks.
The WinnersFoundationprovidesavital service tothe Californiahorse racingcommunity,with
a large referral base andrelationshipswithamyriadof mental healthandsubstance abuse
treatmentfacilities bothinand out patient,cityandcountyservices,soberlivingenvironments
and mental healthpractitioners. All arrangementsandreferralsmade byWinnersare atno cost
to the employee orhis/herfamilymember,andconfidentialityisparamount.
The racingcommunityhasalwaysbeenabouttakingcare of itsownand WinnersFoundationis
blessedtobe allowedtoofferandsupportsecondchancesforthose employeeswhohave life
style strugglessaysBobFletcher,Executive Directorof the Foundation.
In 1984, Lou Rowan,one of the original foundersof the OakTree RacingAssociation,enlisted
several otherprominenthorsemenincludingGinoRoncelli,HermanSmith,Jr.,andJoe McAnally
to developaservice tohelpandheal those withthese afflictions.Fromthatmissionstatement,
WinnersFoundationwasestablished. Fromthe backstretchtothe FrontOffice,Winners
Foundationhasexpandeditsreachtohelpmore employeesandtheirfamiliesgetasecond
chance at life andat work.
There islittle roomforerror on the track and inthe barnswhendealingwiththe powerof a
race horse,saidone notedThoroughbredtrainerinsupportof employeeshelpedbyWinners
Foundation. We needeveryone sharp-eyedandclear-headedwhenhandlingthese beautiful
