Subject: Women in ESC
Dear Colleagues,
During the term of Professor Pinto, the President and Board of the European
Society of Cardiology asked all its constituent bodies to aim for a minimum of
25% female representation by 2018 on the task forces, committees, nuclei
and boards of our Associations, Councils and Working Groups.
The European Society of Cardiology, as you know, has carried out a careful
review of its membership to define the strategic plan for 2016 - 2020. In doing
this, multiple steps have been taken to ensure that we understand our
members better and comprehend their needs. This in-depth analysis is vital if
we are to ensure that our Society continues to represent and be the voice of
the European cardiologist.
The European Society of Cardiology, with its 94 000 strong member base
recognizes the important contribution of every cardiovascular specialist,
regardless of gender. It is widely acknowledged that organisations with a
strong female representation at top management level perform better than
those without and that gender-diverse boards have a positive impact on
performance.
We are very pleased to recognize that the influx of students into medical
schools and their specialisation in the field of cardiology is becoming more and
more gender-balanced, as represents the membership and fellowship of our
Society.
We would like to thank you for your ongoing support, and your commitment
towards a balanced representation of all cardiologists, within your respective
organisation, society, working group, council or association.
Sincerely,
Jeroen Bax, MD, PhD, FESC
President of the European Society of Cardiology
Lina Badimon, FESC
Vice President for Working Groups, Councils, Women in ESC and ESC Grants
