Editor's Notes

  • #5: I express my gratitude to all women.grand-mothers, mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, friends, peers, professionalsto all known and unknown women
  • #6: International Womens Day came about due to several historical occurrences. It is the symbolic culmination of both the long public struggle for womens rights and the more private struggle waged everyday by women that have made the celebration of this day possible. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.
  • #7: While the first observance of a Women's Day was held on February 28, 1909 inNew York, March 8 was suggested by the 1910 International Woman's Conference to become an "International Woman's Day." After women gained suffrage inSoviet Russiain 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there.
