Why did people go to the workhouse ? Because they were poor and they didnt have anywhere to live. And some people didnt have any family. So they had to go to the workhouse.
What did they do at the workhouse? They did many jobs in the workhouse. They had to pick oakum which is the hard bit of old rope. They picked it so the English navy could use on boats. They also had to break stones to make chippings for the road.
What were living conditons like ? They sometimes had to go to bed late or they had to stay up all night working. They didnt really have a good life. For example, they had to sleep on very hard beds which were uncomfortable. and many of the people died and lots of people went mad.
What was the food like? The food was very horrible. They had to eat gruel. It was like a lumpy porridge. Lots of people died because they didnt want to eat it.
What replaced the work house The work house is no more there are people that look after children and if there are children on the road social services take them and find them a home.
