The document discusses how to effectively deal with the large amount of information available in the modern world. It suggests using techniques like storytelling, metaphors, liminal thinking and semantic tools to help articulate and share understanding. Diagrams and mapping are presented as helpful for orienting ourselves in meaning and clarifying complexity. Bringing multi-disciplinary teams together and emphasizing collaboration, shared vocabularies and continuous learning are seen as important for aligning efforts and syncing on new information.
WIAD-2016 Ok, Information Is Everywhere, How Do We Really Deal with It?Natacha Hennocq
油
One of the challenges about information everywhere is not so much about the sheer quantity of information out there, but the ways that we are in contact with it. We talk a lot about sense-making, but recent research in neurophysiology brings a fresh look at memory and how the brain handles place-making; knowing where things are in real life and virtual spaces. Because infoglut is the context of our current work, what tools can we devise, expanding on domain modelling and storytelling, that can help us create sense and space-making bricks for the users?

Natacha Hennocq gave a presentation on how information architects can help people deal with the large amount of information in today's world. As information architects, they create spaces where people can exchange, communicate, learn, and invent. They must consider emerging technologies and the human experience to build context and clarity within complexity. Hennocq emphasized that as information increases, information architects need to help orient people and build mental maps to navigate meaning.

Last November I was in Pittsburgh at the Museums and Computer Network conference, now one of my favorite. I offered a session called Making a Dino Dance: integrating a user-centered design process into a natural history museum, a ten minute overview of our work in FY17 (re: Prototyping Interactive Data Viz: Lessons Learned in FY17). It was a nice opportunity, among peers, to explore how the sausage is made.

Micro-visualizations: Small Visualizations that Make a Big ImpactDesign for Context
油
Presentation by Rachel Sengers and Lisa Battle at the UXDC2017 conference in Washington, DC, on April 15, 2017.
We hear a lot about visualizations for big data these days, but what about small data? The power of communicating data visually cant be overstated. When designing for expert users, we often need to convey a lot of information at a glance to help them make quick decisions and work efficiently. For infrequent or novice users, a visual overview of a process or concept can provide orientation and help reduce the risk of mistakes. Enter the micro-visualization, a way of packaging detailed information in an easily digestible, visual way. In this presentation, we present examples of several different types of micro-visualizations and discuss how they can be used effectively to improve user experience.
This document is the preface to a book titled "Data + Design" that provides a simple introduction to preparing and visualizing data. It was created by Trina Chiasson and over 50 contributors from around the world. The preface describes how the book project started from an online message about creating plain language resources for working with data. It details the process of bringing together technical writers and editors to translate complex data concepts into easy to understand terms. The preface expresses gratitude for the diverse international team that volunteered their time and expertise to create this open source book.
This document discusses converting donation centers into civic innovation hubs in Mexico after the 2017 earthquake. It outlines how social data was mined to organize donation efforts and direct resources where most needed. Challenges included high volumes of unstructured social data and unorganized collection/distribution. Solutions involved custom data tools to monitor trends, build audiences for targeted messaging, and coordinate volunteers. An offline system was also implemented at Huerto Roma Verde donation hub to centralize inventories, track requests and distribute aid. Next steps discussed consolidating partnerships and continuing social engagement to better prepare for future disasters.
際際滷s from session at MCN.edu conference, November 2017.
Session description:
Change is hard, and change is also inevitable. Whether its a big structural reorganization, the arrival of new leadership with a very different vision or a staff downsizing, most of us who work in cultural institutions will face significant change at some point in our careers. The reasoning may be financial, it may be an attempt to create efficiencies and break down silos, it may be an attempt to better integrate technology into the organization, or all of the above. In addition, the process - even when the motivation is to be helpful - can create new challenges and problems: integrating one area at the expense of isolating another, losing talented people, missing the mark on technology improvements, a lack of understanding at the top about whats needed, and - most of all - creating a level of confusion and anxiety among staff.
Its often difficult for staff feel to like they are a part of the solution and not to feel threatened or disrespected, especially if communication and transparency from the top is lacking. So how do we as museum technologists help manage this change in a positive way?
This session will include panelists at various levels in their organizations who have been through an institutional change or two, or are currently going through one. They will share their stories from the trenches and ask bold and honest questions, sharing strategies, methods, and ideas for all of us to embrace as we face change.

Casa Netural residency in Gorizia offered Diego an opportunity to test the ideas that he has been developing over the past years and to enrich them by looking at them from a different and complementary perspective. In other words to put theory into practice.
Along the 4 weeks that he lived in Gorizia he realized how mature and innovative his own understanding of the ludic phenomenon, as most people he connected with, found the value of his research, but what was amazing for him is how much his project was fed back from completely different and complementary perspectives.
Along these days he crafter four game ideas, with different levels of complexity and currently in different stages of development. These are described in the final report.

Nature Inspired Innovation : Designing The Future Using Lessons From The Pastjejchudley
油
In an era dominated by technological revolution, design thinking's impact on economic and cultural success is undeniable.
However, its focus on 'designing for the user' often neglects the broader real-world implications of the complex systems within which the things we design are used.
In this talk, we will advocate for embracing evolutionary and ecological theories as a toolkit for understanding and designing for our dynamic and interconnected world.
By exploring questions about innovation speed, efficiency, and societal impacts through this lens, attendees will gain insights into enhancing UX design, fostering creative problem-solving, and developing impactful, innovative solutions.
From this presentation you will learn:
- How a better understanding of natural biological systems will help to improve their design practice
- The importance of considering the context of how and where your designs will be used
- How to think about your work in different ways that will enable them to take different approaches to problem solving
- How to adopt systems thinking approaches to help you design more impactful, innovative and effective design solutions.
