4. THE LINK
A creator/inventor is talented in searching and finding “the novel”
while an innovator is talented in articulating the vision to people as
well as selling it.
Example:
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak was a genius in programming; he single-handedly
developed the Apple I in 1976, while his friend, Steve Jobs was a genius in seeing
opportunities.
“Woz” understood his creation, while Jobs understood how to link people with the creation.
5. TYPES OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Different types of IP require different types of protection.
However, due to cost related to protecting certain IP, one needs to ascertain if
the cost of protecting that IP is worth it.
Inventions are about new products/processes HOWEVER not all can foster development
New Coke (1985). The funny thing about that epic failure was that the beverage itself actually tested well—people liked the stuff. What didn’t fly was the implication that there was something wrong with Old Coke
While creation is part of innovation, the key part of innovation is learning
Patents are needed in order to create the condition of excludability that is necessary if private actors are to engage in costly innovative efforts… think utility models maybe?
IP does stands out as the product of the mind even without the protection it deserves!!!
NOTE: Not all inventions deserve to be patented however.
Disclosure in exchange for Monopoly
Catch-up process is initially imitative, consisting of the acquisition of scientific and technological knowledge as codified in the relevant literature.
Inventive step: How big a step is brought about by the novel feature?
iPhone had the functionality of a mobile phone, portable media player, game console and handheld computer in a single device
