The weekly progress report summarizes Sahil Bhatti's week observing manufacturing processes at HMT Limited. He observed the 15-step process for manufacturing connecting rods in the engine shop. In the new engine shop, he saw the multi-step processes for manufacturing crank cases and cylinder heads, including milling, drilling, reaming, tapping, finishing and washing. Next week he will observe tractor assembly.

PROJECT TITLE
Study of various shops used in manufacturing different components used in tractor
manufacturing and their assembly.
OBJECTIVE FOR THE WEEK
The objective for the week was to study how various parts are machined in the engine shop
and the new engine shop.
ACHIEVEMENT FOR THE WEEK
In the engine shop there occurs manufacturing of components which is being used in the
engine assembly. We saw the machining processes which are used in the manufacturing of
connecting rod. It takes 15 different stages to be fully completed. Different processes
involved are facing, horizontal milling etc.
In the new engine shop manufacturing of the engine parts are done. There are 2
manufacturing lines in the new engine shop: One for the Crank case and one for the
cylinder head.
Crank case: The crank case is the housing for the crank shaft. Material used
for crank case is cast iron.
Cylinder head: Cylinder head contains the inlet valve, exhaust valve, fuel
injection valve. It is used to cover the cylinder and piston arrangement.
2. Processes for crank case:
Material received from the casting shop and then marking is done for the removal of
extra material.
Top face milling on horizontal milling machine.
Bottom face milling on vertical milling machine.
Top and bottom face finishing.
Front and rear face milling on horizontal milling machine.
Drilling of guide holes on radial drilling machine.
Roughing of linear bores on one way boring machine
Drilling of oil gallery angle holes.
Drilling of holes in front and rear face on multi spindle drilling machine.
Finishing of drilling, reaming, and tapping in the various holes drilled.
Drilling of oil filter holes.
Final finishing of crank bore on boring machine.
Washing of the crank case.
Inspection of the crank case.
Processes for cylinder head:
Milling of front and bottom faces on vertical milling machine.
Milling of left and right faces on horizontal milling machine.
Valve guide bore on drilling m/c.
Drilling of fuel injection pump.
Reaming of valve guides.
Pressing plugs in holes, valve guides, and injector bushes.
Final finishing of cylinder head.
Washing of cylinder head in washing machine.
Inspection of the cylinder head.
So this is how connecting rod, crank case and cylinder head is manufactured in the engine
and the new engine shop respectively. I had a close look at their manufacturing in the
respective shops and learnt a lot.
FUTURE WORK PLANS:
In the coming week we will be trained in the tractor assembly shop. In this shop whole of
the tractor is assembled and completed for testing.
