nique but strange. Weird but intriguing.
Different but enchanting. These were
all words that I can use to describe Matt
Pfeiffers A Midsummer Nights Dream shown at
the Arden Theater Company last Wednesday
night. It started off with the house band, which
also comprises of the lead actors within the play,
playing an orchestra of different instruments,
from the acoustic guitar to the washboards. Even
though the show hadnt started, I still thought it
was a peculiar way to begin it but in all honesty,
from the moment I walked into the theater, I
knew it wouldnt be an ordinary experience; and
I was right.
The show is a modern twist on the classic
tale of forbidden love that is considered to be
one of the most foundational plays in Western
culture. This play, and the way it is executed,
requires an open mind. Forbidden love is seen
throughout the show as an ongoing theme, even
though the audience is bouncing from one-time
period to another. The story is a romantic
comedy that depicts the events circulating around
the love story of Hippolyta and Theseus. The
story goes on to feature the trials and tribulations
of four young lovers who become enchanted
under a botanic spell.
The characters within this production are
the main reason as to why this production is so
unique in its own way: they wear regular clothes
and look more like people in todays society.
Crazy, right? Its as if they are able to forget
about the current time period that they are
actually in and make themselves believe that we
all took a quick trip back to ancient Athens, and
then back. Then back to Athens. Then back to
now. The cast is bursting at the seams with
talented actors and actresses. Mary Tuomanen,
Lindsay Smiling, Sean Close and Brandon J.
Pierce as Puck, Oberon/Theseus, Bottom and
Demetrius offered comedic relief while Taysha
Marie Canales as Hermia, who is making her
return back to the Arden, and Rachel Camp as
Helena, offer a great mixture of both love-
stricken tragedy and catty entertainment.
A definite standout moment was when
Puck and Oberon were at the top of the stage,
smoking hookah while down on the stage, a
complete disaster was occurring: the lovers begin
to lay their eyes on someone other than who
their heart desires and the kicker is that they
cant control it. Puck was doing exactly what I
was doing, which was cracking up in my seat.
Tuomanen and Smiling had a distinct chemistry
that I didnt really see amongst the other
characters, and that was okay with me. Due to
this and the nature of Pucks character, you cant
help but fall in love with the dynamic duo.
A Midsummer Nights Dream had the
audience cackling in their seats while also
wondering what things would be like if minds
could easily be controlled, as the same time. It

The play was in ttu at 02.03.14 - 04:00. The Yankee Tavern play is filled with excitement and mystery and really amazing. Despite the fact its my first play I have watched the English version but I really enjoyed it a lot. The play was talking about 9/11 events that happened in New York in 2001. Yankee tavern focuses on events of September 11, 2001 when the terrorists hijacked four American planes where two of the planes where deliberately crashed into the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York, one plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia and the last plane, which was attempted to be taken over by civilians aboard, crashed in a field in Shanksville Penssylvania. It happened in bar down in New York near the 2 towers. The play brings out the question of why the Pentagon was not protected by upgrading their security systems against terrorists attack even after facing initial attacks in New York
The play had only four characters namely: Ray who was a friend of Adams father, Adam who is a masters Degree student in International Studies and inherited the bar and the hotel after his father committed suicide, Janet who is Adams fianc辿 and Palmer who is a strange man of few words and who had mystery surrounding him. Ray is a disturbed conspiracy theorist who believes everything is a conspiracy. While in the hotel, he talks to ghosts of the residents and theorizing on an abundance of conspiracies including the moon landing, murder of JKF, the Bay of Pigs, global warming and spore allergy attacks. When palmer comes into the bar and shares the information he had about the conspiracy, he changes the way Adam and Janet think. Ray implicates the owner if the World Trade Center, US government, Saudi princes and numerology. Concerning the murder of John F. Kennedy, many people wonder if Oswald was innocent or was the CIA responsible for that murder. Concerning the first moon landing, some people believe that footage was fabricated in the Hollywood and that the samples brought back from the moon were fake.
The characters see that their relationships are threatened and they are desperately trying to hang on to these relationships and save these relationships with each other. I think its real easy to see the play as having this sort of destructive world that is infringing upon these characters which makes them not trust each other and makes their relationship start to deteriorate. It was really interesting to me to see these people as the cause of whats going on outside... Its the idea that if we can be more honest in our relationships, if we can spend more time with the people were involved with and be more open and understanding and trust each other more, then I think the world wouldnt be quite as messed up a place. According to Libertys Tower Theater website, Mary Poppins is based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Dis- ney film. Set in England during 1910, the play highlights the relationship between the Banks family and Mary Poppins, who teaches them to value each other once again. As an Alluvion production, performers of Mary Poppins were as diverse as the costumes they wore. Those from outside of Liberty were invited to try out for the play, and as an added bonus, each performer was paid and able to list the perfor- mance on their resumes. Carson Burkett, a Liberty alumni, came back to Lynchburg to play the part of Bert and according to Burkett, the play high- lights deep lessons and focuses on relationships. This isnt necessarily touched on in the movie, but I love how the mu- sical itself touches on the importance of family relationships and marriage, Burkett said. Thats one of my favorite parts, the subplot with Mr. and Mrs. Banks and their changing rela- tionship and how they realize how much that unity matters in a marriage. Many different lessons are taught by Mary Poppins through- out the play such as how to work cheerfully, how to use ones imagination and treat each day as an adventure, the worth of money, and how important it is to choose words carefully. Oftentimes these lessons were highlighted by beloved Mary Poppins songs such as Feed the Birds, Jolly Holiday, Step in Time and Chim-Chim Cher-ee. Tough lessons were also taught to the Banks family as every- day hardships were encountered. When Mr. Banks felt stress at work during the plays first act and was harsh with the chil- dren, Mary Poppins served as a reminder that children must sometimes take care of their parents in life. I think its just a powerful story of family and that no family is too broken that God cant mend that, that those relationships really intervene, ensemble cast member Timmy Williamson said. Sometimes it takes another person like Mary Poppins or Bert to really help people see the truth and can be made whole again in a family. According to Libertys Tower Theater website, Mary Poppins uses a mix of magic and common sense to teach the family her lessons. Many stunts were used in the play, such as Mary Poppins flying stunt. According to Director Linda Nell Cooper, Mary Poppins is the grandest musical Alluvion has brought to life.
