Techniques of News Gathering • Study first the data gathered • Arrange/number the facts according to their importance • Eliminate all unnecessary details
Form & Structure of the News Story REPORTER • • • • Write the story right way Play up the dominant points Be accurate & truthful Avoid editorializing & writing libelous materials • Give the source(attribution) of the news
• Write the names in full when these are mentioned for the first time • Identify the names mentioned • Watch out for errors of facts & grammar • Observe the guidelines of clear & effective writing • Adopt a paper style sheet for consistency
For Young Writer • Type copy on standard-size copy paper, double or triple spaced to give room for the copyreader’s marks. • Write a one or two-word slug line in the upper left-hand corner to indicate the subject of the story.
• Complete sentences & paragraphs on the same sheet of paper. • Avoid splitting words at the end of the line. • Write more at the end of every sheet, except the last one which should be marked # or 30. These marks, together with the slug line, should be encircled
Various Types of News Structure Straight News Story • The summary lead answers the most important W’s depending on which of the W’s is the most prominent among them. • The body consist of the elaboration of the W’s of the H.
The Torres Goldies ripped the Laurel Greenies last week at the High School oval because of better team work, 65-60. (Lead) The Torres team was composed of Antonio Oropeza, captain; Rogelio Romero, forward; Seki Santos, and Dioscoro Reyes, guards.(Elaboration of the WHO)
The game was held in the evening of Sept.10 in connection with the celebration of Barangay Day. The Greenies’ defeat was the first they suffered in the current invitational games. (Elaboration of the WHEN and WHO)
The Goldies played smoothly. They did not shoot for the basket until they were near it. The cheering squads kept the players’ morale high.(Elaboration of the HOW) Although the final score was 65-60, there were times when the lead of the Goldies was as much as 10 points. (Further elaboration)
