Introduction Young Adults Graphic Novels
It is the policy of the Forest Park Public Library to maintain and share a collection that meets the
needs of our community. This collection development policy serves to guide library staff in the
development of the young adult graphic novel collection, including guidelines for selection and
weeding, and guiding principles in the development of the collection.
Selection Plan
1. Materials will be selected with an emphasis on:
- Patron Interest
- Relevance to teen issues
- Input from critical reviews and reliable review sources the library consults
- Attention to ongoing series the library already maintains
- Currency of publication
- Shelf Space
- Price
2. An effort will be made to include materials representing multiple viewpoints. No material
will be excluded because of the race, nationality, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or political
or social views of the author. Materials will not be excluded due to content as long as they meet
the criteria for selection.
3. The library will focus on acquiring new and varied materials and series in order to
maintain patron interest in the collection. Effort must be made to stay aware of what our teens
are reading and want to read.
4. Effort should be made to avoid too much duplication with the Adult Graphic Novels
collection. Duplication in the event of strong teen interest or relevance to teen issues will be
acceptable.
Retention and Weeding
A current, attractive and useful collection is imperative in maintaining a graphic novel collection
that will circulate well; this can be obtained by consistent maintenance through the selection,
weeding and replacement of materials to keep the collection up-to-date. Materials in the
collection are assessed on an ongoing basis. Materials may be removed from the collection due
to a variety of factors including but not limited to a deteriorated appearance, inaccurate or
outdated information, space constraints, unneeded duplicates, disuse, or lack of interest.
