Your Lifetime Balance Sheet. How much you earn, spend, and leave behind in the UK. © Neil Halford 1 st September 2009
Overview I was watching the 10pm news the other day and the BBC announced that UK Social Benefits now exceed income tax receipts. Now I did Economics at school and it seems obvious to me that this situation is untenable and there will have to be some quite drastic change if the UK is not to become insolvent. Then I looked at the Office of National Statistics (ONS) official figures and wondered what an average household might earn, spend and leave behind after death. The following slides show the key figures.....
Basic assumptions ONS 2008 figures show that life expectancy for males is 77.2 years. Retirement age for males is 65 Average working life for males is 47 years (18 to 65) Average non-dependant life for males is 59 years (18 to 77) The current state pension for a couple in the UK is £7,007.00 p.a. All figures used are ONS published figures, mainly for 2008, and are intended as an overview/ snapshot, there is a huge amount of detail available.
Lifetime Earnings The ONS figures for 2008 have average household earnings at £29,500 p.a. Assuming a working life of 47 years, lifetime income therefore is £1,386,500.00 – not including pensions.
