The document summarizes preliminary findings from a study evaluating the impact of the Ballymun Alcohol Strategy, which was implemented between 2011-2015 to reduce alcohol-related harm in the area. Reference Letter
Dear Sir/Madam,
9. It is my pleasure to recommend John Zachary to a position as Zumba/Hip Hop instructor.
I have known John for the past two years, in fact we met in a Zumba class. John quickly rose
through the ranks in the class. He stood out on account of his stamina and style, quickly
absorbing the routines and soon joined our team in choreographing his own songs and requests
for the staff at bodyworks gym. His routines are well organized and fun both to preform and to
teach and have often been adopted by experienced instructors.
In the classes he has substituted he signals well and has a high energy teaching style that is well
received among his students and fellow instructors. In fact, he has gathered quite a following of
students and I have often attended classes where the teachers bemoan his absence.
He is a natural, lacking the training many of us boast. However, he more than makes up for this
lack of background with a quick wit and a willingness to always improve. His military training
provides a stamina and strength that only adds to this natural skill making him a force to be
reckoned with.
As a college John is engaging and determined. He works hard and is not afraid to help out when
and where it is needed. He is a welcome addition to our team.
Sincerely,
Dain Wood

Career Goals
Long Term Goals
13. At this point in life my long-term goal is still to become a Police Officer and move away
from Lubbock. I had a very different goals when I was younger, I wanted to serve my country as
a Marine. Unfortunately, as of a few months ago, I found out that those pathways are not
available to me. Fortunately that is not the end; I found another way to serve. As an officer of the
law, I feel that I could accomplish both my goal to protect and serve my community as well as
my need to get out of this city, to make a place for myself.
This is readily measurable and achievable because I would I would have a badge number
attached to my name to show I was an officer of the law. From there, I would need to have a
fully completed and documented set of transfer papers, and a ticket in my hand stating that I was
leaving Lubbock and heading to any other state in the Union. This plan is fairly basic to
implement. In fact, the timeline would be rather simplistic both in planning and realization.
Short Term Goals
Step one would be to graduate with my degree. Step two to find and fill out the
application, pass the required physical and written exams, as well as any psychological tests that
are sure to come with such a demanding position. Step three would be to actually attain
employment. In reality, assuming I apply here, the hardest step will be staying in the Police
Force long enough to be able to transfer to another precinct. I am not completely sure of the
duration necessary to stay in one area before you can be transferred. However, I believe that it
changes depending on where you start and where I end up. I have a few resources, most
importantly my friends who are currently associated with different police stations and positions,
and my Marine friends who are going to help me get in shape to pass their physical fitness
exams. The police friends can help me learn the different CB codes and protocols. The Marines
physical fitness exam is a lot more extensive than the police one. The run itself makes the police
14. version seem like a literal walk in the park. We have to run 3 miles in 21 minutes for the Corps,
and for the police its 1.5 miles in 24 minutes. That doesnt take into account the push ups or sit
ups or pull ups just for the PFT. Then Marines have a CFT (Combat Fitness Test) that is even
more difficult. Using these resources, I expect this portion of the application process to be
relatively easy. One last short term goal would be to find a place in wherever I end up to teach
Zumba and Hip Hop. It has become a big part of my life, and how I see and define myself.
Teaching is often how I get through tough situations, when something bad happens in my life, or
when I just need to let off steam. being able to do that, and to help others do the same, allows me
to both keep myself afloat, as well as provide one more service to my area of residence.
What are the short term goals that I will apply to this long term career goal? As I
mentioned before, the physical fitness exam, the written exam, and maintaining employment
long enough to transfer. Of course all of these follow my immediate goal, the acquisition of my
Bachelor's Degree. Though Texas Tech does not make this an easy goal to reach. The physical
fitness exam will not be difficult at all. I already meet the criteria to become a Marine Corps
Officer, so passing the Police Officer test will be about as easy as teaching a Zumba class, a
regular pastime of mine. Though the written exam is something I may have to study for, when I
am motivated, learning new things becomes second nature. The only part I may have trouble
with is being able to maintain composure in one office long enough to be transferred to another.
In the past, I have not always gotten along well with cops, however I want to be a father at some
point, and if being a cop is what it takes to be able to take care of my family, then I will do
whatever I can to make it work. I am currently working on my BA and, after a very frustrating
last semester, only two semesters away. After Summer II, that will be accomplished, and I will
be one step closer. The first three goals are more important than the last, because the first three
15. are actually necessary to becoming a cop, whereas the fourth goal is just to make myself seem
more hireable. Plans for evaluation are simple; if I pass the exams, then I pass, if not, then I have
failed both the exam and the goal, at least for now. The only goal that will not be easy to evaluate
is how long I need to be hired before I can transfer. That information I wont have access to until
after I am an officer.
Importance
I chose these goals, both the short- and long-term, because they are possible, without
being easily attainable. It is important to have goals because having goals gives you a reason to
keep moving forward. A measurable goal actually allows you to mark your progress, which is a
more desirable goal than just saying I will get better. How you define better is how you turn
this whimsical idea into an actionable goal. These particular goals are important because they are
mine. I chose them as a way to motivate myself to keep from stagnating like so many around me.
Becoming a Police Officer is a new goal, but becoming a Zin member and Zumba Instructor is
not. I am currently a teacher in one gym, however there is always room to grow and improve.
The way that this goal ties into being a cop is that both, in their own right, are pillars to the
community. Both can be seen as leaders, and can be held to a higher standard in their particular
fields. Another mutual benefit is physical fitness. Both require a certain amount of physicality to
the job, and they can build off of each other in this way,
How INTS 3301 Helped
I think I am in atypically unique position in which my classes and my career goals arent
necessarily closely related. Nor school in general with either opportunity. This class did seek to
teach me to look at things with a more critical eye, and to try to make connections most others
would not, how to be more professional in my business dealings, and how to fix my resume. A
16. better resume will help me look more hirable in any job situation, and being more professional in
a business situation can mean anything from keeping a more level head to just avoiding an
unnecessary escalation of a problem. Both of these show that I am willing to put my job needs
above myself, which is what most hiring entities are looking for for extended employment. I was
already used to trying to make connections to different things in everyday life. This class did
help in the manner that stretching will help an athlete before or after a game, namely working out
and relaxing a muscle to keep it from atrophying or tearing.
