Chromium is a transition metal found in rocks, soil, plants and animals in several forms. It has many uses including making steel, alloys, dyes, and preventing corrosion. Chromium is also essential in small amounts in our diet for protein and fat metabolism. Chromium was discovered in 1780 by a French chemist who isolated it from a mineral sample. It is compatible with acids but should avoid basic solutions. Chromium has a silvery appearance and forms a protective oxide coating when exposed to air.
