• #9: What is the difference between public and private groups? Public groups are listed around the site and on the groups page , profiles, and photo pages if the photo is in a group pool. There are two types of public groups: anyone can join and invitation only . Group administrators can choose to show or hide the group photo pool and discussion topics at any time. Private groups are not listed anywhere on the Flickr site. You can join them only by invitation. Permalink | Top How do I make a public group private? And vice-versa? If you are an administrator, go to your Groups page and select the group. Select Administration on the right. Go to Privacy toward the bottom. Click "Make this group private." You can make a public group private, but a private group cannot be made public .

For whatever you find interesting, fascinating, or mind-blowing on Flickr, galleries are a way to curate up to 18 public photos or videos of your fellow members into one place. Permalink | Top Seriously, how is a gallery different than favorites, sets and collections? That's a good question. While "sets" and "collections" are all about you and your stuff, think of a gallery like favorites on steroids (in good way -- not in the "baseball has been ruined" way). Favorites are an ongoing stream of images within the Flickrverse that you like. Galleries give our members an opportunity to curate their view of Flickr, to bring together up to 18 photos or videos. The features of a gallery will give you more opportunity to share your view about what makes your selection interesting.
• #13: The Commons was launched on January 16 2008, when we released our pilot project in partnership with The Library of Congress . Both Flickr and the Library were overwhelmed by the positive response to the project! Thank you! The program has two main objectives: To increase access to publicly-held photography collections, and To provide a way for the general public to contribute information and knowledge . (Then watch what happens when they do!) FAQ I work for a cultural heritage institution that would like to be a part of The Commons. How do we do that? Please let us know you're interested by registering here . It helps a lot if you let us know some background about your institution, and direct us to any online photo collections you already have. How can I get involved? We've already seen fantastic contribution from the Flickr membership. Your tags and conversations about the content in The Commons has been wonderful! The best way to get involved is to add a tag or two to the photos you see, and if you happen to know anything else about the subject, by all means add a comment. What's "no known copyright restrictions?" This new rights statement is being contained to the institutions participating in The Commons, at the account level. It is a requirement for participation in the program that institutions may rightly claim "no known copyright restrictions" on the content they share. More information .
• #15: About the Rights Statement Participating institutions may have various reasons for determining that "no known copyright restrictions" exist, such as: The copyright is in the public domain because it has expired; The copyright was injected into the public domain for other reasons, such as failure to adhere to required formalities or conditions; The institution owns the copyright but is not interested in exercising control; or The institution has legal rights sufficient to authorize others to use the work without restrictions. Copyrights on Photographs Under "The Commons," cultural institutions that have reasonably concluded that a photograph is free of copyright restrictions are invited to share such photograph under their new usage guideline called "no known copyright restrictions." Photographs can be difficult to analyze under copyright law, not only because laws around the world differ with respect to scope and duration of protection, but because the photographs themselves often lack credit lines, dates and other identifying information. Libraries, museums and other cultural institutions have a great deal of experience with photographs because they frequently collect, preserve, document and study them in accordance with their nonprofit missions. However, in many instances, a cultural institution will not be the rights holder under copyright law. Therefore, it can neither grant permission to others who wish to use a photograph nor provide a guarantee that the photograph is in the public domain.
