 Keep track of everyone's progress
 Identify motivated teachers
 Guide and equip them
 Develop curriculum (it's more
than just stories!)
 Mentor teachers
 Mobilize local funding
 Report on any outside funding
Three Ts of Literacy

Teachers need six things:
 Compassion
 Commitment
 Creativity
 Confidence
 Competence (skills, training)
 Community (regular meetings
with other teachers)

 Relevant (to needs/interests)
 Readable (not too difficult)
 Challenging (not too easy)
 Vocabulary
 Sentence length
Learners need LOTS of text.
 To develop fluency
 To gain the reading habit
 To benefit from literature
 To learn things
 To enjoy reading
Someone needs to monitor:
 Quality of texts
 Quantity of texts
 Availability of texts
