This study examines the effects of tile drain inputs on stream temperature in a low-gradient agricultural stream in central Illinois. Tile drains are underground pipes that drain excess water from agricultural fields into nearby streams. The study uses thermal energy as a tracer to understand how tile drain water influences stream and hyporheic zone (underground area beneath the streambed) temperatures. Results show that while tile drain water is 3-4°C cooler than the stream, the stream's higher discharge overwhelms the temperature difference. Hyporheic temperatures indicate top-down cooling driven by surface water advection with conduction below 0.2 meters depth.
