I was born in Kazan, big city of two million on Volga River, capital of Tatarstan in the middle of European Russia. I was luck enough to be admitted in the Kazan State University escaping compulsory draft in the Soviet Army. The Soviet Army, deadliest in the world for its own servicemen, was also a giant factory of crushed hopes and spirits, destruction of human dignity and self-confidence, turning out millions of starry eye teenagers into work-shirkers and alcoholics most of whom would end up in filthy squalor and endemic drunkenness in communal public housing.
