This study examines the effectiveness of pragmatic instruction in English textbooks used in Japanese high schools, analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data from eight textbooks and surveys of teachers. Results indicate a significant lack of pragmatic information in the textbooks and reveal that while more experienced teachers may have better pragmatic judgment, overall teacher awareness needs improvement. The authors argue that enhancing teachers' understanding of pragmatics is crucial for developing students’ communication abilities.
