China invaded Tibet in 1950 and has exerted control over the region since. The Chinese government has tortured and inflicted cruel treatment on Tibetans over many years. Tibetans have been denied freedom of movement within Tibet and the right to leave and return. China claims Tibet has historically been part of China, while Tibetans have a history of independence from China for over 1300 years and want freedom from Chinese rule to preserve their culture. Tibet is considered a communist country under Chinese control, where Tibetans must follow Chinese rules or risk imprisonment, torture or death for dissent.
