This document provides an abstract for an ethnographic study on the subculture of women of color within the BDSM lifestyle in the Bay Area. It outlines the study's objectives to explore this subculture from a psychosocial perspective through 16 interviews. It also aims to challenge the DSM-5's classification of BDSM behaviors as paraphilias or disorders by arguing they are misunderstood and viewed through a heteronormative lens. Key findings include discrimination these women face both within and outside the lifestyle, as well as ways engaging in BDSM has empowered them as women of color. The document advocates for more sex-positive awareness and acceptance of consensual BDSM practices.
