I was born in Raleigh, but raised in Harnett County (hometown of Coats). My dad, E. T. "Ted" Malone, was a probation officer and ran an apartment house on Wrightsville Beach during the summers, while my mother, Mildred Winborne Malone, was the county truency officer. While growing up in Coats in the 1950s and 1960s we mostly played neighborhood sports and our teenage jobs were working in tobacco, or cotton.
