Urban forms can develop organically without centralized planning or be planned and coordinated. Organic urban forms see houses and infrastructure develop in an uncontrolled way, while planned forms are deliberately designed. The way a city grows, whether organically or through planning, provides insights into the attitudes and lifestyles of its inhabitants. Early urban forms from over 12,000 years ago developed as permanent agriculture allowed people to settle in one location, with the first true cities emerging between 4500-3500 BCE in the Middle East being carefully organized with walls, entrances, markets and designated areas.
