I’m not a typical director.
Naturally, I know how to manage people, build programs and remain on budget. But I’m also someone who brings people together, which I attribute to my time in the classroom. I’ve taught adults as a side-job most my life. Teaching taught me to accept people where they are, talk with them about their needs, and coach them to add value. Managing people requires patience and a long-term view. Flexibility and humor are important, and empathy helps with meaningful feedback. These are skills you can’t get in grad school. It’s relationship building at its core, and this view impacts how I manage.
