• #2: Could you imagine camping on a mountain?
• #3: I will be traveling as a 25 year old, Caucasian, married male with my 24 year old wife (Party of 2) for 1 night and two days during summer seeking to hike, bike, and camp. While travelling down I-75 to home in Lexington, Kentucky we picked up a Kentucky Travel Guide and read about the Little Shepherd Trail and Kingdom Come State Park, prompting us to go on Yelp! To find out more about where we could go on our weekend trip which we desire to be relatively close, and Letcher County is within 2.5 hours driving from Lexington so we chose it. This is a review of our trip.
• #4: We take many trips and try to spend as little as possible on these trips, here’s what we usually try to spend for a typical two day excursion. $60 for food $20 or less for lodging –camping is preferred $50 for souvenirs or activities like paddle boating $50 for gas $180 total for two days of fun
• #5: So you want to know more about me? I graduated from Berea College, got a masters after working in industry for a few years, and I’m currently pursuing entrepreneurial passions of mine. I lead an active lifestyle and partake in many recreational sports team, some of my hobbies are hiking, biking, and camping – all of which I hope to pursue on my weekend excursion. However, I must always find a place to camp that my wife feels safe. We try to not spend much money on our trips by camping and cooking, which to us is more fun than eating out and staying in a hotel anyways. We really enjoyed the beautiful outlooks, 15 mile paved trail, hiking trails, and paddle boats on this trip. I’d highly recommend this to others, everything costs about the same as we expected.
• #6: Pictured is Bad Branch Falls in Letcher Co. Arriving at 8 am. On a Saturday morning in Whitesburg, Kentucky using my phone’s GPS and after reading about Bad branch falls from a Facebook friends post, I would take my wife to the storied Bad Branch Falls, which is roughly a 1 mile hike both there and back and a nice area to relax and enjoy nature.
• #7: 12 pm we would head up to this scenic outlook to eat our lunches we packed
• #8: 1 pm: Once we reached where we would be camping along the trail, we would unload our bikes and ride them on the Paved Pine Mountain Trail to Kingdom Come State Park, stopping frequently to enjoy the outlook points.
• #9: Around 5 pm we’d go back into town to eat at the Pine Mountain Grille which we read on Yelp! was delicious and affordable and then head over to Pine Mountain Outfitters to buy some tent stakes we lost.
• #10: Around 7 pm we would return to set up camp, watch the sun set, make a fire, and begin to relax for the night
• #11: 9 am I would prepare breakfast for us utilizing my portable stove.
• #12: 11 am: After watching the sunrise, packing up, and eating, we would drive the rest of the trail to the Kingdom Come State Park headquarters in Harlan County and rent paddle boats to enjoy a nice day out on their 3.5 acre lake.
• #13: 3 pm: Make an appointment for us to visit the master falconer, Mitch, at the Letcher County UK cooperative extension office so he could show us his fascinating array of owls, hawks, and falcons.
• #14: 4 pm: Visit Appalshop after grabbing Las Pena to go
• #15: 5 pm: We would end our trip from a different perspective – under a scenic outlook - by playing 9 holes at Raven Rock Golf Course in Jenkins, Ky. and grab a bite to eat at the Parkview Inn on the way home
