Keter Torah Synagogue was founded in 1917 by Hazan Jacob Chicorel and his wife, Judith Chicorel and a few other Sephardic Families including the Chicorel, Cicurel and Papo families. They were Immigrants from Turkey. Haham Chicorel studied with and from the noted Rabbi Al Gazi, and became the spiritual and organizational leader of a growing and diverse group of immigrant Jews to Metro Detroit. The organization, then known as the Sephardic Community of Greater Detroit, rented space at the established synagogues, and other locales to host High Holiday Services and Social Events.
