CCAP and the ARRIS E6000 CER
ADVANCING CABLE TELECOMMUNICATIONS
BY MARK KEEFER
The ARRIS E6000 Converged Edge Router (CER)
ARRIS says the E6000 CER is a next-generation CCAP-ready platform that provides cable
operators unprecedented advances in channel density, power efficiency, and cost savings in a
redundant, integrated architecture designed from the ground up for high availability.
What is CCAP?
It is a big deal and game-changer in the way cable telecommunication headends work. Have you ever
heard of the term headend in a box? This is it. CCAP means Converged Cable Access Platform. This is
taking all the functions of the ARRIS C4 CMTS (phone/internet/data) and combining it with the functions
of QAM edge devices that provide streaming video services like Video On Demand, Switch Digital
Video, Digital Video Recording, Broadcast Video Services and Narrowcast Video Services, HDTV and
Standard-Def TV, Music Choice all coming out of one device.
Simply put, this is huge.
Comcast has been working on this for a few years and I recommend reading this article in CED.
CCAP: More than just box replacement by Jorge Salinger, vice president of access architecture, and Ty Pearman, director of access engineering, of Comcast

The way customers watch TV is changing.
The big box in the living room is no longer the only place people watch TV.
People are moving away from just turning on the TV and seeing what is playing on a channel.
Customers are watching TV on the go with tablets, computers and smart phones.
Todays customers are using DVR, VOD, Hulu, Netfix, Google TV and Amazon Prime .
Wireless streaming of IP Video on different devices and networks, Wi-Fi, hot spots and 4G.
The market is very competitive, companies need to offer more services and convenience.
Cable Telecommunications is Evolving
Why is CCAP on an ARRIS E6000 CER a big deal?
It saves money while delivering more services and flexibility.
Less equipment to manage. All video edge services run off the ARRIS E6000 CER.
Less cabling because all your services are running on the ARRIS cabling and combining.
You no longer will need separate combing for separate video edge service platforms.
All your services can be run on one platform, no need for separate VOD, broadcast and
narrowcast equipment, run it all from the same equipment that handles phone/internet/data.
It frees up valuable rack space.
The Downstream port of the E6000 CER
One of the things that impresses me the most about this box is the use of channel bonding and the shear number of QAM channels out
of one port. I have worked with RF for years and I am impressed with the engineering behind this. It is like an entire headend of
modulators coming out of one port. I am looking forward to seeing the output of this device on a spectrum analyzer.
Using DOCIS 3.O QAM channel bonding, 32 ANEX B / 24 ANEX A QAMs per
RF port. Annex A mixed 256 / 64 QAM per RF Port.
