I obtained a PhD in Botany in 2002 where my research involved a comprehensive molecular and taxonomic characterisation of an economically important but taxonomically confused family of red algae, the Gracilariaceae. This included elucidating intergeneric, species and population problems among the Gracilariaceae for the entire coast of South Africa, and providing plausible biogeographic hypotheses to differentiate among the different floristic components of the country.
