I use Linux as my primary OS (with Windows 7 in a Virtual Machine when necessary) to avoid viruses, spam-ware, privacy invasion, and ineffective and bulky antivirus programs and to have strict control over my computer, use only software I want on it, and have more immediate access to trouble-shooting solutions. (Also, MS Windows and Apple's OSX both make me feel dirty.)
I prefer to use and promote Free and Open Source Software when possible to avoid technology lock-in and to further encourage proprietary developers to create more value with their software instead of resting on the results of decades-old work.
