The document summarizes key points from Daniel Pink's book "A Whole New Mind". It discusses how the world is shifting from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age, where abilities like design, story, empathy and finding meaning will be more valuable. It also outlines the six senses - design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning - that will be important for success in this new era. The summary concludes by emphasizing the importance of cultivating these six senses through education and an open mind.

A presentation on Dan Pink's A Whole New Mind and Drive given to students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Raikes School of Computer Science and Management.
The document discusses different types of thinking and the changing nature of work. It contrasts synthetic thought with addressing concepts and implications. It also references the agricultural, industrial, information, and conceptual ages and how the economy has shifted from being built on people's backs and left brains to right brains and qualities like purpose and meaning. The document asks questions about whether one's work can be outsourced or taught online and discusses emotional intelligence and being left or right brained.
The document summarizes key points from Daniel Pink's book "A Whole New Mind" which argues that society is shifting from valuing left-brain, logical thinking to also valuing right-brain capabilities for the "Conceptual Age". It discusses six essential right-brain aptitudes needed for the future: Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play, and Meaning. For each aptitude, it provides strategies for cultivating those skills and their importance for the future.
The document discusses the importance of creativity and right-brain skills in the 21st century workplace. It argues that logical, linear left-brain skills are no longer sufficient for success. Creativity, empathy, big-picture thinking and other right-brain abilities are now most important. Forces like abundance, globalization, and automation mean that routine work is being outsourced or automated, while non-routine conceptual work requiring creativity will increase.
4 Steps to Make Your Work More MeaningfulJohn Colbert
油
This document outlines steps to make work more meaningful. It discusses how finding meaning and purpose in work, rather than just success and money, leads to greater happiness and fulfillment. The nature of work is changing from the industrial age focused on command and control, to the information age valuing engagement, to the current social age where work allows making a difference and connection. True meaning at work comes from serving others, lifelong learning, focusing on growth each day, and finding where personal purpose, skills, and interests intersect. When work aligns with these factors, it satisfies core human needs and brings fulfillment.

This document discusses metacognition and learner-centered psychological principles. It defines metacognition as awareness and understanding of one's own thinking and learning processes. There are three categories of metacognitive knowledge: knowledge of person variables, knowledge of task variables, and knowledge of strategy variables. The document also outlines 14 learner-centered psychological principles grouped into cognitive/metacognitive, motivational/affective, developmental/social, and individual differences factors that influence learning. Effective learners employ metacognitive strategies like self-monitoring and strategic thinking.
This module discusses individual differences and student diversity in the classroom. It begins by challenging students to identify factors that create diversity, demonstrate a positive attitude towards diversity, and develop teaching strategies. It then lists factors like socioeconomic status, learning styles, and exceptionalities that contribute to student diversity. The document outlines benefits of diversity such as enhancing self-awareness, cognitive development, and preparing students for society. Finally, it provides tips for teachers on capitalizing on diversity, including encouraging sharing of experiences, integrating multicultural activities, communicating high expectations, and varying instructional methods.
Teaching Learning in the Conceptual Age 2007 versionKatie Christo

The document discusses how society is shifting from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age. In the Conceptual Age, skills like design thinking, storytelling, empathy, and finding meaning will be more important than linear, logical skills. It argues we need to teach students these "right brain" skills to succeed in a world where many jobs can be automated. Specifically, it recommends cultivating the "six senses" of design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning through technology-enhanced teaching and learning.
The document discusses how the world is changing in ways that require new skills from children, including the rise of Asia, abundance, and automation. It argues that to succeed in the "Conceptual Age," children will need "high concept" skills like creativity, pattern recognition, and storytelling as well as "high touch" skills like empathy, collaboration, and finding purpose and meaning.
The document summarizes key concepts from the book A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink. It discusses the transition from the left-brain dominated Information Age to the emerging Conceptual Age, which will be ruled by right-brain skills like design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning. These six senses will be increasingly important as automation eliminates certain jobs and more work can be done more cheaply overseas. Creativity and skills like synthesizing different fields, understanding emotions, and finding purpose will distinguish success in the future.
The document discusses how technology, information, and culture are changing exponentially and demanding more innovation, quality, transparency, personalization and speed while providing less time, energy, money and simplicity. Old systems are breaking down while new systems have yet to be created, requiring skills like purpose, innovation, collaboration and learning. The future will reward those who can solve problems by seeing opportunities and connect and empower people.
This document discusses the importance of discovering and nurturing children's talents and creativity. It argues that creativity is valuable and should be encouraged in classrooms, at home, and for children's futures. It outlines Wallas' five-stage model of creativity and states that discovering talents can help children's self-esteem and mental well-being. Examples are given of common creative forms like art, music and dance, but it is noted that creativity can appear in many aspects of life. The document advocates for teachers and parents to help improve children's creativity through imagination activities and recognizing each child's unique abilities.

The document discusses ideas around designing university spaces for the 21st century. It touches on several key ideas including the need for open, flexible spaces that support collaborative and conversational learning. It also emphasizes that spaces should be designed not just as architecture but with consideration of how they can promote learning and community. The library is highlighted as a key space that needs to embody new pedagogies and serve as the central intellectual hub of the campus.

The document discusses the importance of "educating the heart" in advocacy efforts for arts education. It argues that advocates need to reframe their messaging to focus less on new paradigms and more on how arts education allows students to fulfill their potential and contribute to building a better world. Specifically, it recommends advocates share personal stories of transformation through the arts on various online platforms to demonstrate the potential of creative engagement in education. The goal is to change hearts and minds by welcoming more people and telling stories in a generous, clear, and direct way.

1. The document discusses the importance of developing a systematic approach or "system" to create wealth, rather than relying solely on hard work. It argues that wealthy individuals like Charlie Munger and Bill Gates have developed sophisticated systems that generate value even without their direct involvement.
2. It then discusses how modern society and education systems are designed to produce "obedient employees" rather than entrepreneurs, limiting people's potential to develop wealth-generating systems of their own.
3. However, it argues that in the new "Holistic Age of the Renaissance Professional", individuals will tap into their full potential by developing innovative systems and services to market globally via the internet, allowing many to achieve economic sovereignty and worldwide impact.

The intersection of AI and pharmaceutical formulation science highlights significant blind spotssystemic gaps in pharmaceutical development, regulatory oversight, quality assurance, and the ethical use of AIthat could jeopardize patient safety and undermine public trust. To move forward effectively, we must address these normalized blind spots, which may arise from outdated assumptions, errors, gaps in previous knowledge, and biases in language or regulatory inertia. This is essential to ensure that AI and formulation science are developed as tools for patient-centered and ethical healthcare.

2. The title of the last book you read Are you Right Brain or Left Brain? YOUR NAME Your greatest hope for the 21 st Century An interesting fact about yourself
4. We live in a changing world. We need to change how we think to meet the needs of that world. We are moving from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age.
5. Part I- The Conceptual Age: Right Brain Rising: Artists, inventors, designers, storytellers, caregivers, consolers, big-picture thinkers- will now reap societys richest rewards and share its greatest joys.
6. A Whole New Mind is for anyone who wants to survive and thrive in this emerging world- people uneasy in their careers or dissatisfied with their lives, entrepreneurs and business leaders eager to stay ahead of the next wave, parents who want to equip their children for the future, and the legions of emotionally astute and creatively adroit people whose distinctive abilities the Information Age has often overloaded and undervalued.
7. Left and Right Brain Abilities: Left Hemisphere Right Hemisphere Controls the right side of the body Sequential Text (what is said) Analyzes details Controls the left side of the body Simultaneous Context (how its said) Synthesizes the big picture
9. Abundance Consumer bounty in the U.S., Europe and sections of Asia -The U.S. spends more on trash bags than 90 other countries spend on everything. We throw out what we dont want to store. - it is no longer enough to create a product thats reasonably priced and adequately functional. It must also be beautiful, unique, and meaningful
10. Asia Asia and countries on other continents- High tech white collar work now goes to India, Brazil, Egypt, Poland and China at an annual salary of $15,000 a year. Today knowledge workers will also need to develop a new set of aptitudes to succeed. Because of this workers will need to forge relationships, tackle novel challenges and synthesize the big picture.
11. Automation To survive in this age, individuals and organizations must examine what theyre doing to earn a living and ask themselves three questions: 1.Can someone overseas do it cheaper? 2. Can a computer do it faster? 3. Is what Im offering in demand in an age of abundance? Therefore, high tech by itself is no longer enough- we need to supplement high tech with high concept and high touch.
12. High concept / High touch High Concept High Touch Ability to create artistic and emotional beauty, to detect patterns, opportunities, to craft a satisfying narrative and combine seemingly unrelated ideas into novel invention. Ability to empathize, to understand the subtleties of human interaction, to find joy in ones self and to elicit it in others and to stretch beyond the quotidian (the ordinary) in the pursuit of purpose and meaning.
13. Baby boomers are entering the Conceptual Age with an eye on their own chronological age. They recognize that they now have more of their lives behind them than ahead of them.
14. PART II-- Introducing the Six Senses In the Conceptual Age, we will need to complement our L-Directed reasoning [left brain] by mastering six essential R-Directed [right brain] aptitudes. Together, these six high-concept, high touch senses can help develop the whole new mind this new era demands.
15. The Six Senses Design Story Symphony Empathy Play Meaning
16. Design Today its economically crucial and personally rewarding to create something that is also beautiful, whimsical, or emotionally engaging. Design, stripped to its essence, can be defined as the human nature to shape and make our environment in ways without precedent in nature, to serve our needs and give meaning to our lives. we assume that all products of our competitors have basically the same technology, price , performance, and features. Design is the only thing that differentiates one product from another in the marketplace.
17. Design: Keep a design notebook Read design magazines Become a design detective Visit a Design Museum C-R-A-P-ify your graphic design: Contrast Repetition Alignment Proximity
18. Story The essence of persuasion, communication, and self-understanding has become the ability also to fashion a compelling narrative. Stories are important cognitive events, for they encapsulate, into one compact package, information, knowledge, context, and emotion. Abstract analysis is easier to understand when seen through the lens of a well-chosen story.
19. Story: Story, businesses are realizing, means big money.advertising, counseling, consulting, and so on- accounts for 25 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product. Write a Mini-Saga Enlist in StoryCorps Use a Tape Recorder Visit a Storytelling Festival
20. Symphony Whats in greatest demand today isnt analysis but synthesis seeing the big picture, crossing boundaries, and being able to combine disparate pieces into an arresting new whole. Like drawing, symphony is largely about relationships.
21. Symphony: Listen to great symphonies Hit the newsstand Draw Keep a Metaphor Log Follow the Links: Play your own version of six degrees of separation courtesy of the internet Look for Solutions in Search of Problems Create an Inspiration Board.
22. Empathy What will distinguish those who thrive will be their ability to understand what makes their fellow woman or man tick, to forge relationships, and to care for others. Empathy is the ability to imagine yourself in someone elses position and to intuit what that person is feeling. Empathy makes us human. Empathy brings us joyEmpathy is an essential part of living a life of meaning.
23. Empathy: Test your Empathy Quotient Eavesdrop Empathize on the job Take an acting class Dont outsource your empathy Volunteer
24. Play [There are ] enormous health and professional benefits of laughter, lightheartedness, games, and humor In the Conceptual Age, in work and in life, we all need to play. The opposite of play isnt work. Its depression. To play is to act out and be willful, exultant and committed as if one is assured of ones prospects.- Brian Sutton-Smith
25. Play: Find a laughter club Play at inventing Go back to school Dissect a joke Play right-brain games
26. Meaning We live in a world of breathtaking material plenty. That has freed hundreds of millions of people from day-to-day struggles and liberated us to pursue more significant desires: purpose, transcendence, and spiritual fulfillment. Our fundamental drive, the motivational engine that powers human existence, is the pursuit of meaning.
27. Meaning: Say Thanks Stop making excuses Take a Sabbath Use time wisely Dedicate your work Picture yourself at ninety (Longevity is increasing)
28. What does it all mean? The implications for the world of education are profound. The world is coming of age to a place where we know the teachings in a classroom have a distinct purpose now and in the future. The importance of every interaction is heightened when we know, once again, of the far reaching ramifications of what teachers can do for students.
29. This economic crush in the U.S. and in the world clearly tells us the world is interlinked. In order to survive in this highly competitive and profit seeking society, we have to open our mind to be a happy and unique individual cultivating our six senses as well as learning knowledge. The survival of both businesses and of our country depend on it.
30. In the culturally diverse world creativity is the way of life, so a mind, even more so, is a terrible thing to waste. The seriousness and earnestness with which we pursue this is only offset by the fun well have in this mission.
31. America Is always at its most powerful and most influential when it is combining innovation and inspiration, wealth-building and dignity-building, the quest for big profits and the tackling of big problems. -from Hot, Flat and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution and How It Can Renew America, by Thomas L.
