I grew up in modest circumstances in Oak Park, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. However, I had unconditional love from two caring and selfless parents, and an older sister and brother who taught me valuable lessons of their own. I had the good fortune of receiving a scholarship to Detroit Country Day School, where my eyes were opened to a world beyond the box between 10 Mile Road and the Detroit River. I graduated from Northwestern University thanks to a combination of Pell Grants, work study money, funds I had saved from summer jobs and federal student loans.
