The University of Bath library was using the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) system but decided to reclassify their collection using the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. A task group was formed to review classification options and concluded the library should adopt DDC. A pilot project retroconverted architecture books from UDC to DDC which was successful. The project then expanded to reclassify other subject areas. The library continues ongoing retroconversion projects over the summer to convert more of the collection from UDC to DDC, though most of the collection remains in UDC.

His first career was in broadcasting, where he designed and built commercial radio station studios in Manchester, Cardiff and Bristol, also working as a presenter and programme producer.
