IT Capstone Course Overview
• Students work in teams to develop or implement a real-world IT solution
– Address a typical business and organizational need such as data
management, application development, system deployment, or security
analysis.
– Apply information technologies, applications, best practices, and standards
in technical design, development, and implementation.
– Practice soft skills in a real-world IT project, including project planning and
management, research and learning, communication, writing, presentation,
and teamwork.
Involve IT related design, development, implementation, analysis and research.
Have real-world contexts, requirements, communications, and challenges.
Are completed in about 3 months, by a team of 3 to 5 people (about 120
hours of project time per person, and about 400 to 500 man hours total).
Include both technical components and soft skill components such as
communication, teamwork, research, project management, presentation, etc.
Require students to learn and practice new knowledge and skills.

Project Highlight – Honey Baked Ham
• The project focused on the development of a Store KPI
reporting/analytics solution with a flexible and dynamic
dashboard using Power BI.
• Four student teams competed for a scholarship for the
best solution.
• Capstone teams met regularly with Honey Baked Ham IT
and business personal through the entire discovery and
build process.

demonstrating understanding of the
business needs and provided a very well
thought out solution and a good structure
within the data flow and architecturally.”
“Team #4 … demonstrated their weekly
understanding as they presented a solution
that was user friendly, creative, and
architected to provide the end user the most
flexibility in viewing or changing data
parameters. Additionally, documentation
provided was outstanding and showed a
clear process in place for the design and
development of the solution (including all
references).”

Project Highlight - IT Management Web App
• Three teams of students worked on the
development of an open-source web
application platform that will eventually
grow into a full-fledged IT management
system.

Project Highlight - Heart Disease Prediction
• Two student teams worked on research project to
explore the importance of individual attributes in a
large numeric data set on the accuracy of various
classifiers in predicting heart diseases.
• Project sponsor
– Dr. Seyedamin Pouriyeh
• One team had a conference paper titled “Exploring
Attribute Selection and Classification Methods for
Predicting Heart Disease” accepted in CSCI 2022
(9th Annual Conf. on Computational Science &
Computational Intelligence).
– Richard Jacob Stupka, Trinadh Chowdar, Chigurupati,
Devin Jackson, Demontae Moore

Project Highlight – Incomm Payments
• Scholarship Capstone Project with InComm Payments' Go
Studio
– Project focused on Retail of the Future innovations. Created
functional prototype of cutting-edge emerging technologies concepts
and reported on feasibility under guidance of Go Studio team.
• Close collaboration
– Sponsor contracted with KSU.
– Sponsor provided staff to periodically oversee and guide students.
– KSU provided staff support and a faculty mentor.
– Students were interviewed, 1 graduate and 2 undergraduate
students were selected.
– Students received a scholarship.
• Additional details of experience are protected by an NDA. Non-
Disclosure Agreement projects are available as an option for
proprietary or sensitive projects. All involved personnel and
students sign an NDA.
