I'm a native Tennessean, born in the segregated South. Thank God, that era is over but we have new challenges.I've lived many different places. Like many writerly types I've had crazy jobs -- the lunch counter at Woolworth's, making chocolate suckers, the flashing blue light at K-Mart....Restaurants from Mexican to Indian to a Jewish deli. Settled into reporting in 1989, but also did grant writing and non-profit work. Lived on Orcas Island in Washington State for seven years. Moved back to the South in 2000 after a stint in Northern Calif. and New York City.
