II. Arrange for a site visit, if possible.

3. What is a Project Statement? 鈥� A project statement 鈥� defines the problem to be solved so that work can begin on the project 鈥� provides an initial understanding on the scope of the project

4. Stages of Building a Project Statement I. Contact key individuals in the sponsoring organization (or the internal division). II. Arrange for a site visit, if possible. III. Do preliminary background research IV. Ask questions, listen, and take good notes in your laboratory notebook.

5. Doing Background Research 鈥� What do I need to find out? 鈥� Where and how can I get the information? 鈥� How useful is the information? 鈥� When do I have enough information? 鈥� Any questions should be asked ahead of time

6. Elements of a Project Statement 鈥� Statement of Need 鈥� Preliminary Requirements 鈥� Basic Limitations 鈥� Other Data 鈥� Questions

7. Statement of Need 鈥� A couple of paragraphs 鈥� Discusses the perceived need 鈥� Does not have to be very precise 鈥� Do NOT include a solution 鈥� Allow for fresh/creative approaches

8. Preliminary Requirements 鈥� Describes the requirements broadly 鈥� Does not have to be very precise 鈥� Does not require a detailed list (that will come next when you do the Project Specifications) 鈥� Be careful not to specify prematurely

9. Basic Limitations 鈥� Describes known constraints 鈥� Notes applicable codes/restrictions 鈥� Discusses undesirable features 鈥� May include simple sketches

10. Other Data Includes relevant information that does not fit in other sections such as that about the equipment, facilities and/or policies of the sponsoring organization.

11. Questions Includes questions that have been raised in meetings/discussions but which cannot be answered until later in the design process.

12. Format for the Project Statement 鈥� Cover Page (described later) 鈥� Body: Project Statement with all the necessary elements (as described before) clearly labeled. 鈥� Additional Information: Identify key technical areas/skills used in the project.

13. Cover Page A. Course Number (ECE 4901) and term B. Title of the Project (descriptive) 鈥� Team members (with majors identified) 鈥� Sponsoring Organization (contact information)

14. Design Labs 鈥� C19 and C43 鈥� Lab benches will be assigned in two weeks
