    St Johns River
   Ecological Center

This thesis is a study of the
interaction between built
and natural systems. Through
                                   West Elevation. Rhinoceros, Autocad
immersion in a series of
typological environments
and ecologies a more
thorough understanding of
the systems and components
of these typologies can be
gained by the occupant. The
St Johns River system and
Jacksonville, FL are the natural
and built bases for the various
interactive typologies. These
typologies are expressed in
the development of a mixed-
use urban development
anchored by an ecological
center exhibiting and
researching the St Johns
River basin. The typologies
create a varied level of
enclosure or immersion from View from Riverfront. Rhinoceros, 3d Studio Max, Photoshop
fully closed research biomes
to completely open natural
areas. The immersion of the
occupant into the St Johns
River and its ecologies is
intended to trace the path of
the river system. By following
the river from its fresh
headwaters to the brackish
mouth and into the ocean
beyond the hydrological
and ecological connections
that span hundreds or even
thousands of miles can be
condensed and experienced.

The program called for a pool
facility with associated locker
areas, fitness spaces, offices,
and classrooms.

The design is about the effects
of light and air penetrating
the pool facility. The building
skin is designed to be a series
of proportional apertures that
respond to the programmatic
demands of the spaces;
areas demanding privacy are
placed in tectonically heavier Model; Basswood
spaces.

The overlapping of the
different aperture patterns
begins to create a moire
effect on the interior of the
spaces. This effect ensures
that the experience of the
facility changes on an hourly,
daily, and seasonal basis.

The program is set within
an outer basket to create a
microclimate effect on the
interior. By allowing venting
at the roof and building skin
the interior spaces can be
more easily regulated for
thermal comfort. Model Interior; Basswood Parti Diagrams; Pen on Paper

        CSO Tower

The program called for an
expansion of the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra complex
to include a full music and
theatre school with attached
residential and hotel facilities
in a mixed-use skyscraper in
Chicagos Loop.

The design draws inspiration
from the stringed instruments
of the CSO. Strings are used
to organize to connect a
series of spaces across the
building. These strings with
key points in the building
define the planes of the Structural Framework Skin Conditions

the building shifts depending
on the program contained,
creating spaces such as
balconies for the hotel and
residential areas overlooking
the Chicago lake front.

The design process for the
project utilized several
different computer programs,
most notably Gehry
Technologies Digital Project.
The program allowed layers
of parametric relationships
so that changes in one piece
of the project would reflect
throughout. This connects
each string to the overall
performance and form of the
project overall.

           Winner:
    Best Pavilion Design
Client: Interface Europe SA

Interface Europe was seeking
a new design for their trade
show pavilion and created a
student competition to find
their new design.

The pavilion is intended to
showcase Interface, their
products, and their ideals. To
respond to this, the design
is a modular system related
to their products, integrates
display areas within the
structure, and uses materials
that are representative of Constructed Design; Paris, France; Photo by Others

Lake Calumet Raptor
       Center

The program called for a
facility that would tend to and
rehabilitate injured raptors in
the Greater Chicago Area.

The project is conceived of
as a gradient between the
fully natural areas to the
west of the site and the city
on the eastern edge. As the
injured bird is rehabilitated
it is moved further into the
natural area to the west.

The site is organized by a Parti Diagrams and Grid; Photoshop & Autocad
30 x 30 grid that is either
marked by a column or a
tree. The columns become
the structure for the medical
facility, for enclosure pens,
and for light fixtures and other
site necessary structures. Over
time the local environment
will overcome and dominate
the site again filling the site
within the functional grid.
