The Bronx Library Center in New York City achieved LEED Silver certification as the city's first municipal building to do so. It is three times the size of the previous library and welcomes twice as many visitors. Energy efficient strategies like a glass curtainwall, daylighting, and green roof are anticipated to reduce energy costs by 20%. Most materials have recycled content and 80% of wood is FSC certified. Over 90% of construction debris was recycled.

This document summarizes a presentation by Vincent Poon and Tony Caputo on using Autodesk Revit for early design stages. They discuss how Revit can be used for massing studies, computational form finding, curtain wall design, and more. The presentation provides examples of how to generate and manipulate massing forms in Revit, develop curtain wall designs, and utilize rendering and animation tools to explore design options in the early stages of a project. It emphasizes how Revit enables accurate, transparent and consistent analysis throughout the design process.

Willoughby Engineering is a team of building engineering and design specialists with extensive experience working on prominent projects around the world, who have come together to provide high-performance solutions through an integrated design approach. The firm utilizes building engineering, sustainability, computational analysis, and other services to inform architectural visions from an early conceptual stage. Willoughby Engineering aims to create high-quality, high-performance buildings by challenging conventional wisdom and collaborating closely with architects and designers.
Generative design uses algorithms and programming to create variations on designs and explore different solutions. It allows for fast generation of many designs with minimal effort compared to traditional CAD tools. While it enables creativity and flexibility, generative design currently lacks a clear theoretical framework and manual changes to generated models can be lost. Case studies on the Serpentine Gallery pavilion and National Swimming Center in China demonstrate how generative design was used to develop complex geometries and optimize structural design.

The document outlines the design brief for a semester-long studio project. Student teams will design The Chicago Center for Enterprise, a center for start-up companies focused on architecture, design, craft and technology. The project site is the historic Flat Iron Arts Building in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. Each team must redesign the building's interior, add a fourth-floor roof extension within set parameters, and design parking and site plans for neighboring lots. Successful models of these types of collaborative workspaces in Europe are described to inform the design approach.
