External and internal challenges as well as challenges that come with leadership roles can threaten one's passion for their work over time. Even more difficult to address than burnout is a "burn-down" where enthusiasm and intensity have faded gradually due to familiarity and longevity in a role. Burn-down may be harder to recognize than burnout for both the individual and those around them. It is important to be aware of signs of burn-down developing in order to address declining passion before it negatively impacts one's work.
