I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Cultural Anthropology at the University of California Riverside. My doctoral dissertation research is being conducted in Peru, in the Andean highlands that surround Cusco and Machu Picchu, two icons that have a hold on the imaginations of tourists the world over. My project concerns the consequences for locals as a result of the privitization of Cusco Peru's heritage to the transnational tourist industry. I am looking at two local communities struggles to stake their own claims on that heritage in the midst of massive foreign capital investment in key infrastructural resources.
