Gustav Klimt was born in Vienna, Austria in a large family with seven siblings. He began studying art at age 14. Klimt enjoyed painting large murals and buildings with his brother initially. He was drawn to using gold and silver in his paintings to create bright, shimmering works. Klimt also appreciated geometric forms. His favorite subjects to depict were women and flowers in many vibrant colors. Music, especially Beethoven, also inspired Klimt's work; he created paintings conveying what he felt while listening to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and a large mural piece.
