An environmental scan, defined loosely, is a scan of the ecosystem that affects an organization. This environmental scan is of the grants ecosystem that may shed light on opportunities for this particular institution of higher education (IHE). This is a partial scan, not a comprehensive one. The purpose of this session is to give participants a sense of how they may engage this work if theyre so inclinedand what to look for in the various databases, websites, and other destinations. This session introduces some methods for searching for particular grant funders that may fund particular projects of interest locally. The destinations include Grants.gov, AI searches, Google Search, and private foundations and corporate foundation sites. Participants may suggest particular destinations as well. This will cover what information may be relevant to capture to assess whether the source is promising for particular aims or not. ]]>

This session introduces participants to the experience of an individual or group blue sky dreaming session. The idea of a blue sky dream is to think imaginatively without constraints about how a particular field or discipline will advance or should advance in the future. Dreams are wonderful ways to package grant programs and projects in ways that may be appealing to grant funders. Todays session introduces some ways to think about whether or not youre ready to pursue grant funding. For some, youre ready to jump straight into the deep end of the pool, which is fine. For others, it feels better to start with a toe in the shallow end. Either way and everything in between works. Grant pursuit is anxiety-inducing for somebut it really is nothing to be intimidated by. It is just a merit-based process to ensure that the grant funds are going to the most competitive organizations for the optimized ideas. ]]>

Notes Profiling a Program w/ Available Data /slideshow/notes-profiling-a-program-w-available-data/271973695 notesprofilingprogramavailabledata-240923160634-5f7e3f7b
Todays session explores ways to profile a program or department or bureaucratic unit, so that that data is available when it comes time to write a grant proposal, write a grant report, or use documented information for other programmatic purposes. So much is known by insiders to a program, and so much is at their fingertips, but it can be difficult to acquire the needed information for the necessary work. This session suggests that some initial and continuing effort to document a program or department would be beneficial. This is an exercise in know thyself as a bureaucratic unit. ]]>

Long nonfiction chapters are not in-style and may never have been. Where average chapter lengths of nonfiction book chapters are about 4,000 7,000 words in length, some may be several times that max range number. The explanation is that there is some irreducible complexity that that chapter addresses that cannot be addressed in shorter form. This slideshow explores some methods for writing longer chapters while still maintaining coherence, focus, and reader interestand while using some technological tools to write and edit more efficiently. ]]>
