This study involved an assessment of 29 springs on the Zuni Reservation in four areas of the reservation (Nutria, Pescado, Dowa Yalanne-Black Rock, and Ojo Caliente) that represent areas with concentrations of springs or relatively large-volume spring discharge. The assessment of each spring included geologic and geomorphic mapping; measurement of spring discharge; measurement of field water quality parameters; water sample collection and analysis for major cations and anions, stable isotopes and tritium; identification of the source aquifer; and preliminary assessment of flora and fauna. ]]>

GGI recently presented a paper providing results of a survey of Springs and wells in the Pahrump Valley, and springs in the Spring Mountains to evaluate sources and timing of recharge to the Pahrump Valley aquifer. GGI Senior Geologist Paul Drakos presented this study, which was conducted in conjunction with the Nye County Nuclear Waste Repository Office (NWRPO) and the University of New Mexico (UNM). The alluvial aquifer is the main source of water for municipal, domestic, and irrigation wells in the valley. In addition, spring discharge has been utilized for irrigation, mining and domestic uses but also maintains critical habitat. Water samples were analyzed for major anions and cations, hydrogen, oxygen and carbon isotopes, and, for a subset, helium isotopes.]]>

Agriculture is the largest user of groundwater in the United States. Ground water at dairies used for cow drinking, milking parlor clean-up and crop irrigation is produced from wells that often are often improperly designed and completed. Inefficient well design results in increased pumping costs and increases the frequency that wells and/or pumps have to be replaced. Inefficient wells require significantly more energy to pump lesser amounts of water than properly designed wells. Significant operational cost savings (power, pump replacement) can be realized through properly: Selecting screen size/geometry, Locating screened intervals, Selecting filter pack size, Developing the well, Testing the well, Maximizing pump efficiency, Sizing pipelines and Minimizing pipe runs where possible. ]]>
