Unit 14
Title : Responding to emergency
service incidents
View this in slide show now.
The aim of this session is to enable you to understand
the health and safety considerations when attending the
scene of an emergency response incident.
The objective is that upon completion of this session you
will be able to :
 List Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
 Discuss ESI operational PPE
Appraise what PPE is appropriate for given ESIs.
Some of you may be able to:
Explain the need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and
scene safety measures
If you missed the lesson you should view
this whilst you read page 53 -56 of course
book 2.
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
 Ambulance service:
 Disposable aprons
 Protective overalls
 Face masks
 Protective eyewear
 Ear protection
 High visibility jackets
In your groups appraise the
case study and describe the
need for PPE (Say what it is
intended to prevent).
Ambulance Service: Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE)
Four were injured and one trapped inside a
car following a crash that blocked the A47
Acle Straight near Great Yarmouth.
The A47 between Acle and Yarmouth was
blocked for almost two hours following a
two-car crash near the Halvergate turning at
about 1.35pm today.
A spokesman for the East of England
Ambulance Service said four people were
injured; one female and two adults were
treated at the scene before two of those
involved were taken to the James Paget
University Hospital in Gorleston for further
treatment.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service sent two
crews to the scene. A spokesman said they
used hydraulic rescue equipment to release
casualties and provided scene safety.
The road reopened at about 3.30pm.
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
 Police:
 Fire suits for specialist
units
 Protective headwear
 Goggles/visors
 Riot equipment and
shields
 High visibility jackets
In your groups appraise the
case study and describe the
need for PPE (Say what it is
intended to prevent).
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
 Police drugs
raid case
study:
 Friday, 9.25am:
Eight people were
arrested on
suspicion of
supplying class A
drugs after a raid
was carried out in
Peterborough.
 Cambridgeshire police officers
arrested three teenagers from
London and five men at an
address in Robden Court in
Woodston at about 4.15pm.
Scene safety measures
 At an emergency the
emergency services
has a duty of care to
themselves and the
public:
 Warning signs
 Barriers
 Cones
 Road closure
 Diversion signs
In your groups briefly describe
the purpose of these measures
to protect emergency services
and the public.
FRS Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE)
 FRS:
 Fire resistant suits,
gloves, boots
 Protective headwear
 Self-contained
breathing apparatus
 Visors/goggles
 Decontamination suits
 High visibility jackets
In your groups appraise the
case study and describe the
need for PPE (Say what it is
intended to prevent).
FRS Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE)
 FRS crew attend
burning car on M62.
Summary:
In this session we have :
Described the need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
 Discussed ESI operational PPE
Appraised what PPE is appropriate for given ESIs.
 Some of you may have:
Explain the need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and
scene safety measures
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
For next session: On your own research a maximum of three ESI
that have involved the:
 Police service
 Fire and rescue service
 Ambulance service
You will use the case studies to assess the health and safety
equipment needed to ensure personal safety for public service
workers at those incidents.
For each incident you will need to say:
What PPE would have been worn at the incident
 How that equipment works
What it is intended to do
 What injury it prevents
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
For example. If you researched a house fire then it is likely that the
fire fighters would have worn all the equipment shown in Table14.6
of course book 2. One of those is boots. Therefore when you come
to write about the use of boots at the incident you would write it like
this:
Safety boots. Fire-fighters needed to wear these to protect their feet
from injury. The boots are reinforced with protective material that
surrounds the toes, heel and sole. This absorbs impact, prevents
sharp objects from penetrating the boot and prevents the conduction
of heat. The complete boot is made from a fire retardant material
that can withstand high temperatures and prevents the conduction
of heat to the fire-fighters skin. The boots are also water proof.
Relevant legislation is the Personal Protective Equipment at Work
Regulations 1992.
