Editor's Notes

• #2: Greetings, My name is Michael O’Neal. I am the Area Representative for Linvic Engineering here in Houston.
• #3: Linvic Engineering was founded in the early 70’s. Our business at the time was supplying nuts and bolt packages for North Sea applications. Over the years our clients started asking since we were supplying the nuts and bots, could we also supply the flanges. Thus our flange business was born. Since then we have expanded our capabilities and product offering to cover most of the items and components that make up subsea systems, from standard ANSI flanges, to forged and machined anchor flanges to high pressure custom designed project specific forged and machined parts.
• #4: As mentioned we make a wide range of parts. At Linvic we do not have a specific product line as much as we have varied manufacturing capabilities. We do our best to match these capabilities to the parts and components you need to successfully compete your projects. In addition to the machined parts, we also source pipe, tubing, gaskets, nuts and bots, and valves.
• #5: Where Linvic really shines is when there is extreme delivery pressure and the cost of not having it is way more than the cost of the items themselves. Our processes lend themselves to being able to execute on a project quickly and concisely.
• #6: We deal in special requirements for the most part. Our business is typically not the commodity type business. Where Linvic can help is when it is most difficult to get in the time frame you need it. One of the things that make an application special is materials. We are very familiar with high strength carbon steels like A694 – F65 – F70, 4130, along with Duplex, Super – Duplex, all other types of stainless, Inconel, Hastelloy, LF-2, LF-3, Copper Nickels, and many others.
• #7: It has been our experience that almost every project has some application that is difficult to meet. Either in terms of the material requirements, testing requirements, inspection results, and or the delivery needed. These are all situations that would lend themselves to calling Linvic Engineering for help.
• #8: So, that is a little bit about who we are and what we do. The question you might ask now is, so what? What makes Linvic any different than any other shop with similar capabilities? The answer is in how we do what we do. There are several keys to our ability to produce parts quickly and efficiently. The first is our effort in controlling the raw material. For instance, a majority of the work we do is made from A694 to either an F65 or F70 technical specification. In order for us to guarantee the outcome we instruct the mill as to the specific chemistry we require.
• #9: Over the years of working with BP – Aberdeen and others we have determined an optimal chemistry to start with. For example, to bake a chocolate cake, if you do not start with the right ingredients you will not end up with the right results. The ingredients are extremely important. We tell the mill how we want the material made. Above is the chemistry we us for our A694 material. We strive to keep around 800 tons of raw material in inventory at any one time. Our orders for raw material are in the 200 ton range. On many occasions this results in multiple batches of raw material to choose from when an inquiry is placed. This allows us to show you the actual material specifications and not theoretical ones from an industry standard. Our mill orders come to us in various shapes and sizes ranging from 2” round bar to 18” x 18” x 24” ingots. With this wide range of material we can make fittings that are small enough to fit in your hand up to room size forgings. The result is we have the material in our possession typically before you send us a request for quote. Once an order is placed you will never get a call from us saying the delivery has been delayed because we cannot source the material. We make sure we have it before we quote.
• #10: The next unique part of our process is in how we respond to quote requests. All documents and specifications are actually read. I know that sounds a bit weird to say, but it is true. We address all technical questions and details at the beginning. There will never be a time we “throw a number at it and try to figure it out later”. We do not operate that way. This goes back to the objective of being able to guarantee our results. If we do not have a good understanding of what we will have to do when we get the order there are too many chances for things to go wrong which could lead to missed deliveries and additional costs. Another result of us doing our homework up front is it allows us to have very stable pricing. When we quote you a price, that is the price you will pay for the job. We will not come back and ask for additional funds after the purchase order has been placed. Unlike others, we will not have to do that because we will already know what it will take to do the job right the first time and on time. In addition to stable pricing it removes the need for multiple exception requests. Because we have figured out the requirements ahead of time we do not need to come back and ask for exceptions because we already know we can do the job. We are not the design engineers. We believe if you have asked for a specific mechanical requirement there is a reason for it. Who are we to try to get you to take something less than is required. In addition, we understand just how expensive exception requests are. When they happen it adds many thousands of dollars to a project in the form of hidden costs.
• #11: There are also needs for third party testing on most orders. We welcome third party inspectors to our facility. They are a key component to our quality program. The work they do confirms we are doing what we say we will do. Unlike other manufacturers we look forward to having inspectors involved in the work. Our facilities are set up with day offices for them to work in while at Linvic. In addition to third party inspections we also understand the necessity of documentation and data books for most projects. The data books are put together as we do the work and will be completed within a week or two after the order is complete. You will never be in a position of begging for data books months after a project is complete. We are very diligent in keeping up with documentation.
• #12: Most of the items we manufacture end up being shipped around the world. Because it does no one any good if the goods show up damaged, we also are very diligent in packing our goods. Without the proper crating and protection there is no guarantee the parts will arrive in good shape.
• #13: These slides here will give you a bit of an idea of the types of parts we are capable of making.
• #14: In addition to machining of the individual parts we also do cladding. Many of the flanges and or spools have requirements for cladding. Many times it is just the ring joint groove that gets clad while other times it is the entire id of the part or spool.
• #15: This picture is of a transition piece for a pipe in pipe installation. Some refer to this part as an anchor flange with others a pull head. Either way, it is a common part for Linvic and is typically a custom designed part for each project.
• #16: Here are some water stops. These too are used in pipe in pipe installations.
• #17: Another part we have made in the past. Large custom pieces which are typical of most projects.
• #18: Here are a couple of solid Inconel valve bodies. These were made for a valve manufacture to a rough machined stage. The valve company then took them and completed the finish machining.
• #19: Here is another example of some of the large parts we have made in the past.
• #20: This picture either shows we can make large diameter flanges of that we have a very small inspector!
• #21: Another example of our capabilities. We can manufacture large flanges along with very small ones.
• #22: The next couple of slides illustrate the process we typically go through to process an order. From forging the raw material to the stamping of the parts for identification and certification to the final machining.
• #23: Once the parts are completed we make sure all parts and stamped according to the project specifications. We then are very diligent in crating of the order.
• #24: These next three slides again, show step by step how a typical project comes together. First the raw material is cut to the proper dimensions then the forgings are made. The bottom right pictures shows the parts after the rough machining process.
• #25: The bottom left picture shows the finished machined parts.
• #26: And finally the crating and documentation that goes with the order.
