Law Enforcement
Torch Run速
in Action
We all have the ability to change lives...
It is those who act on their ability and give
of their time and talent who will
reap that reward.
- F/Lt. John Card, Michigan Law
Enforcement Torch Run Director
What started in Kansas as a flicker of hope
for Special Olympics has now become
a roaring flame of stability for Special
Olympics athletes world-wide
- Chief Richard Lamunyun, Founder of the
Law Enforcement Torch Run
Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for
Special Olympics is the movements largest
grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness
vehicle founded in 1981 when Wichita, Kansas
Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent
need to raise funds for Special Olympics.
The two main goals of Law Enforcement Torch
Run are to raise funds and create awareness
for the athletes who participate in Special
Olympics.
As Michigan's Special Olympics program
continues to grow, more funding is needed
to support the athletes and their families
because there is no cost to the families to
participate. This is where the support of the
law enforcement community becomes crucial.
By getting more involved in Michigan's Torch
Run program you can help raise funds and
create awareness for our athletes.
How do law enforcement officers raise
money?
Diverse fundraising strategies are used to
meet the Torch Runs annual funding goal.
There are several statewide fundraising
efforts such as the Law Enforcement Torch
Run, Polar Plunge, Dodgeball Tournaments,
T-shirt and raffle sales. Many agencies and
correctional facilities also hold their own
fundraisers such as golf outings and hotdog
sales.
What is
Law Enforcement
Torch Run速
?
Where do the funds go?
100% of the funds raised go to directly
benefit Special Olympics Michigan athletes.
Donations go towards the cost of athlete
uniforms, sports equipment, facility and
housing fees and coaches training.
