Energy Meter
 It is a type of meter or a measuring instrument which
is used for measuring the energy utilized by the
electric load
 The energy is the total power consumed and utilized
by the load at a particular interval of time.

 An Induction type Single Phase Energy Meter
is universally used Energy Meter in A.C.
Circuits.
 It is one of the oldest types of energy meter
and it is very commonly used for industrial
and domestic ac circuits.

 Shunt Magnet
It is excited by the current proportional to voltage.
It is in parallel placement with the load. Flux
produced by the shunt magnet lags the voltage
by 90 degree.
 Series Magnet
It is excited by load current. The Alternating flux
produced by the series magnet is directly
proportional to the current and is in Phase with it.
Moving system
 This consists of a thin Aluminium Disc mounted in a
spindle.
 The aluminium disc is placed in the air gap between the
series magnet and the shunt magnet. The placement of
the disc is so positioned that the disc intersects the flux
produced by both the magnets. And the change in the
magnetic field induces the eddy current on the disc.
 A Lag adjuster is required so that the shunt coil flux lags
the voltage by exactly 90 degrees. Adjustment of copper
coil is fitted on the central limits of the shunt magnet
Braking system
 The instrument is spring controlled. The Springs are fixed to
the spindle of the rotating aluminium disc. The scale is
uniformly even and extends over 360 degrees
 The braking system consists of a permanent magnet placed
near the aluminium disc. The relative motion of the
aluminium disc and the permanent magnet induces eddy
current in the disc. The eddy current interacts with the
permanent magnet flux and produces braking torque.
 The braking torque is proportional to the speed of the
rotating disc. The permanent magnet is adjustable, therefore
the braking torque can be adjusted by shifting the permanent
magnet to different radial positions with respect to the disc.
 The induction type energy meter consists of an aluminium
disc placed between 2 electromagnets (series and shunt
magnet). Series magnet has a current coil and the shunt
magnet has a pressure coil. As pressure coil winding has a
large number of turns of fine wire to make it highly inductive.
 When voltage is applied across the pressure coil induces flux
which lags 90属 to the flux produced by the current coil. This
produces eddy current in the disc. The interaction of the eddy
current and the magnetic field exerts a torque on the disc.
Due to this torque disc starts rotating.
 The registering system counts the revolution of the disc and
