Abanindranath Tagore was the first modern artist of India. He was born in Calcutta and received private tutoring in art from 1890-1905. In 1905, he studied Japanese brushwork under Yokoyama Taikan. He established the Government College of Art in 1905 and founded the Bengal School, which pioneered the Indian style of art. Some of his notable exhibitions included shows in Calcutta in 1900 and 1901-1902 where he received a gold medal, and displays in England and France from 1911-1914. Tagore worked in various mediums like watercolor, pencil, oil, and pastel depicting imaginative and personal scenes.
