From data entry to advocacy: recruiting students as Resource List AssistantsSarah Pittaway
油
Presentation given at Talis Insight, April 2016
The benefits and pitfalls both anticipated and unexpected of recruiting undergraduate students to support reading list data entry: experiences from the University of Worcester.
The document discusses the librarian's role at Leeds Beckett University in supporting open access policies and advocating for open access. It outlines how the librarian will check requests for compliance, keep researchers informed of progress, provide advice on payments, and advocate for open access. It also discusses using social media like Twitter and Instagram to promote open access advocacy and providing guidance, education, and technical support to academic staff on publishing open access.
This document discusses relative velocity and how to solve relative velocity problems. It explains that an object's speed depends on the reference frame it is measured from. When measuring relative velocity, vectors can be added to determine the total velocity relative to a particular reference frame, such as when calculating the speed of a person walking on a bus or airplane relative to the ground. Examples are provided to demonstrate how to use vector addition to solve relative velocity problems in different scenarios.
The Shared Library Service (SLS) is a partnership between Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust, Shropshire Community Health Trust, Staffordshire University, and the local PCTs. The SLS employs library staff from these organizations to provide resources and services to over 4,500 members, including books, journals, databases, training, and evidence-based research support. Governance and management of the libraries involves committees and groups to coordinate services across sites and organizations.
The document provides information about the staff and resources available at an information and library services. It identifies Sharon Cure and Katherine Melling as senior information officers who manage the day-to-day operations of the library and provide training and database advice. Fiona Richardson is identified as the information services manager who oversees the overall management of the library and also provides training and database advice. The document also lists the electronic and printed resources available including databases, journals, books, and reports, as well as the staffed and unstaffed opening hours.
From Data Entry to Advocacy: Recruiting Students as Resource List Assistants ...Talis
油
The document discusses how the University of Worcester Library Services recruited students to help enter data for over 1450 resource lists into their new Talis Insight system. Students were hired as "Resource List Assistants" and completed around 65% of the data entry work, entering data for over 500 hours total. The program provided benefits for the students such as work experience, money, and advocacy for the library. It also helped the library populate their new system quickly while keeping data entry costs low. Challenges included making sure students remained enthusiastic and providing additional support for some students.

油
This document provides tips for improving information retrieval practices and evaluating publications. It recommends choosing the right resource for scientific literature or other materials and provides examples like library catalogs and databases. It also suggests comparing practices with colleagues and considering factors like accessibility, journal prestige, and impact factors when deciding where to publish. Resources mentioned include library guides, Google Scholar, and the Russian Science Citation Index.
The document provides strategies and guidance for publishing scientific papers. It discusses why researchers publish papers, such as to share findings, get funding, and advance their careers. It outlines the steps to publishing, including identifying suitable journals, preparing the paper, and dealing with revisions and rejections. Reasons for not writing are addressed, and tips are provided, such as writing early and focusing on exciting research rather than publications. The importance of networking is also highlighted. The overall message is that publishing papers is an important part of an academic career but should not be the primary goal - high-quality research should come first.

A short talk given at the 'Astronomy Tea' at the University of Sydney, Australia, on February 19th 2024.
Abstract:
Over the past decade, the landscape of academic publishing has changed dramatically, with publishers moving from subscription-based models to "open access" in which papers are available to read free of charge. Many journals have made the decision to maintain revenue by charging authors for this, via so-called "Article Processing Charges" (APCs) which can run to $1000s thereby closing the door on those without funds to pay. More recently, there have been moves to encourage researchers to publish using "Diamond" Open Access wherein papers are published without charge to the authors and without cost to the reader. In this talk I shall discuss the ennvironment for Open Access Publishing in Astrophysics with reference to the Open Journal of Astrophysics (OJAp), which offers a not-for-profit service of this kind using an arXiv-overlay model. I will also offer a possible vision of the future of truly "Open Access" publishing based on a global network of institutional and/or subject-based repositories.
(1) While the internet is a useful research tool, it is not a substitute for physical libraries, which provide crucial resources and services. (2) Only 8% of all published content is available online, with 92% only accessible in physical libraries. (3) Libraries offer researchers benefits like expert guidance, curated collections, and a conducive study environment that enhance the quality of research compared to relying solely on internet sources.

Institutional repositories are platforms where a universitys faculty and graduate students can preserve their research outputs. Depositing papers in Open Access repositories will increase the visibility and citation of the article, due to removing barriers to knowledge sharing. It's highly recommended that documents without DOIs to be deposited in the repository that offer DOIs for documents you have deposited. There are several different types of repository that can host your research outputs depending upon your discipline. I will dig into some of them in this workshop.
This document discusses the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in sociology research. It provides examples of how researchers can use the internet and digital tools to conduct research, create websites and blogs, develop online questionnaires, access e-books and journals, and connect with other researchers through social networks. Specific websites are listed that can help with finding sociological publications, building digital libraries, and exploring open access resources for research.
The document discusses publishing research in academic journals. It emphasizes that good publications come from good research, and research and publishing should be integrated processes. Publishing in journals serves to establish date of ideas, certify quality through peer review, disseminate findings, and archive research for future use. The document warns against predatory journals and proceedings that can endanger academics' careers. It provides tips for developing research, conducting literature reviews, selecting suitable journals, working with partners, and navigating the publishing process.

10 easy ways to increase your citation count a checklistMahantesh Biradar
油
The number of papers you publish is important to your career. Publish early and often is heard over and over again in research. However, the number of times your work is cited is important as well because it can indicate the impact that your research has on the field.
Increasing your citation count can also have a positive impact on your career because funding agencies often look at a combination of the number of papers and the number of citations when making grant decisions.

The document discusses various grammar points that are important for medical writing, including active and passive voice, hedging, and pronoun errors. It provides examples and recommendations for each topic. For active and passive voice, it notes that most medical journals prefer the active voice but the passive voice is acceptable in certain contexts like methods sections. For hedging, it discusses techniques like qualifiers, passive voice, and quotation marks that are useful but should be limited. For pronoun errors, it defines ambiguous, missing, and vague antecedents and provides tips to avoid these issues.

Speaker: Aalok Sonawala
The SWWE Regional Network were very pleased to welcome Aalok Sonawala, Head of PMO, National Programmes, Rider Levett Bucknall on 26 February, to BAWA for our first face to face event of 2025. Aalok is a member of APMs Thames Valley Regional Network and also speaks to members of APMs PMO Interest Network, which aims to facilitate collaboration and learning, offer unbiased advice and guidance.
Tonight, Aalok planned to discuss the importance of a PMO within project-based organisations, the different types of PMO and their key elements, PMO governance and centres of excellence.
PMOs within an organisation can be centralised, hub and spoke with a central PMO with satellite PMOs globally, or embedded within projects. The appropriate structure will be determined by the specific business needs of the organisation. The PMO sits above PM delivery and the supply chain delivery teams.
