Wireless power transfer involves transmitting electricity from a power source to electrical devices without wires. Nikola Tesla pioneered this in the late 1800s through inductive coupling and was able to transmit power over long distances, but lacked funding to fully develop his ideas. Modern research in wireless power transfer includes methods like inductive coupling for short ranges and resonant induction for medium ranges. Wireless power could be transmitted over long ranges through technologies like solar power satellites that collect solar energy in space and beam it to receivers on Earth, providing a continuous power source without the limitations of weather or time of day. For any number of circumstances, obsolescence risk is ever present in the electronics industry. This is especially true for human-to-machine interface hardware, such as keypads, touchscreens, front panels, bezels, etc. This industry is known for its high mix and low-volume builds, critical design requirements, and high costs to requalify hardware. Because of these reasons, many programs will face end-of-life challenges both at the component level as well as at the supplier level.
Redesigns and qualifications can take months or even years, so proactively managing this risk is the best way to deter this. If an LED is obsolete or a switch vendor has gone out of business, there are options to proceed.
