A screenplay is a written work that describes the shots and scenes in a movie. It teaches how films are constructed as carefully crafted stories meant to elicit specific emotions, similar to books. Understanding screenwriting gives insight into how movies are created and allows writers to feel empowered in completely controlling a film's story. A screenplay follows a particular format and deals in visual elements and pieces of filmed action rather than internal thoughts, so writers must show rather than tell to visualize what will appear on screen.

The document discusses the main elements that make up a film, including cinematography, mise en sc竪ne, sound, story, and editing. It then provides explanations and examples of some basic cinematography concepts like lenses, framing, lighting, and movement. Finally, it briefly outlines some concepts related to storytelling, composition, and scene analysis that are important for understanding how films are constructed.
1. Cinematographers control light and shape it to create the filmmaker's vision. They must also operate complex camera equipment.
2. A cinematographer must choose whether to shoot on film or video. Factors include budget, desired look, distribution method, and audience viewing experience. Film offers higher resolution but is more expensive, while digital is cheaper but lacks film's look.
3. Cinematographers consider screen format, lenses, exposure, depth of field, and lighting setups to best convey the film's story and tone through the visuals. Three-point lighting is commonly used to motivate scenes.
The document provides guidelines for correctly formatting a screenplay, including using 12 point Courier font, including essential elements like scene headings with locations and times, character names, dialogue, and descriptions of actions and scenes. It also explains how production scripts can include additional details for cameras, lighting, sounds, and shot directions to visualize how the story would appear on screen. Correct formatting is essential for scripts to be considered by production studios and directors.
This document provides an overview of key cinematography techniques used in filmmaking, including: framing, lighting, depth of field, camera shots/angles/lenses, and camera movements. It discusses techniques like high and low angles, close-ups, tracking shots, pans, tilts, and zooms and how they are used to convey meaning and influence audience perception. The document emphasizes that cinematography is a dynamic, essential part of film language that has evolved with camera technology to tell visual stories and efficiently communicate information through shots and lighting.
This document outlines some common conventions of film comedy. It discusses settings that are commonly used like schools, homes, and bars. It also describes technical elements like camera work that captures the environment and characters' expressions. Common iconography includes bright colors, lighting during daytime, and props that could be used for comedy. Character types are also outlined, such as idiots, socially awkward characters, and regular people around whom accidents occur. Finally, it lists themes like anarchic comedy, gross-out, parody, romantic comedy, screwball comedy, and slapstick.
The document discusses TV drama codes and conventions by comparing the openings of several TV dramas. It analyzes the openings of Neighbours, Hollyoaks, Press, and Killing Eve. Some key elements discussed include title sequences, recaps of previous episodes, themes, characters, and tone set by dramatic scenes, music, and imagery. The document also discusses genre conventions like technical codes, characters, narratives, and challenging genres. It provides examples of how some shows reference or draw from other media through intertextuality.
The document defines and describes various cinematography techniques used in film including shots (establishing shot, long shot, medium shot, close-up), camera angles (eye-level, high angle, low angle), camera movements (pan, zoom, tilt, dolly/tracking, boom/crane), lighting (high key, low key, bottom lighting/low lighting, front/rear lighting) and how they can influence messages and impact production elements like font, color and layout. Students will analyze the film To Kill a Mockingbird using these techniques.

The document discusses the codes and conventions commonly found in horror movie posters, particularly those for psychological horror movies. It notes that such posters typically use dark colors like black and red, low-key lighting and shadows to set a scary tone. Close-up shots of frightened or disturbed faces are often employed to pique viewers' interest in the film's threats or problems. Psychological horror posters may feature distorted elements or an unnatural focus on an eye or other body part to create intrigue around the film's storyline. Overall, the document analyzes how visual design elements in posters communicate the horror or psychological horror genre to audiences.
An overview of some of the central conceits of the horror film - done for work with IB & A Level Film students. Many thanks to Colin Odell & Michelle Le Blanc from whose book 'Horror Films' (Kamera Books) this is adapted. Stay Scared!
There are several types of camera shots and lighting effects commonly used in films. Long shots establish the scene and provide context, while angled shots convey hierarchy and power dynamics between characters. Conversational shots like over-the-shoulder and close-ups are used to focus on dialogue and emotions. Different lighting techniques like chiaroscuro create contrast, while three-point fill lighting provides a normal look and high key lighting reduces shadows. Natural lighting resembles sunlight while artificial lighting comes from man-made sources.
This document outlines some typical codes and conventions of teen drama films, including:
- Dull lighting and close-ups are commonly used in mise-en-scene.
- Props like alcohol, drugs, guns and knives are frequently featured.
- Main characters usually focus on a central troubled teen, their love interest, and an antagonist.
- Gritty settings like council estates, flats, and schools are portrayed.
- Costumes show worn, torn clothing.
- Examples of influential teen dramas are listed, along with typical actors in the genre.
- Trailers often narrate a disrupted equilibrium that the main character must resolve.
The document discusses the career of film directing. It describes the nature of the work as developing a vision for the film and overseeing aspects like camera angles, lighting, and hiring crew members. Working conditions can involve long and irregular hours on set both indoors and outdoors. Successful directors typically receive training through dramatic arts programs and have innate creative talents along with good management skills. While the field is highly competitive, employment in film directing is expected to grow in the coming years. The document conveys the author's strengthened interest in pursuing film directing as a career after learning more about the challenges and rewards of the profession.
The document discusses narrative conventions and structures that are common in horror genres. It explains that horror narratives typically follow a three-act structure of an onset phase where a disorder is introduced, a discovery phase where characters learn of the disorder, and a disruption phase where characters work to restore order by defeating the source of the disorder. The document also summarizes some key narrative theories that are relevant for analyzing horror films, such as those proposed by Todorov, Propp, Barthes, and Levi-Strauss.
This document provides guidance on writing an effective documentary treatment. It explains that a treatment conveys the visual mood and story of a project in written form. It should read like a short story to imagine what the documentary will include based on research. Key elements to include are a logline, topic summary, narrative synopsis, and details on style, characters, and distribution. Treatments help secure funding and provide a framework to structure the documentary.
This document provides guidance on scriptwriting for a game trailer. It recommends using Courier New font sized 12 points and including a title page with the script title and author. Scene headings should use CAPS and include location, time of day, and characters. Each page should represent one minute of screen time. The first scene should fade in and include a scene setting. Character names should be in CAPS when mentioned. Dialogue should move the story along and reflect characters while capturing subtext. The document concludes by instructing the reader to format their story into a scripted trailer.
This document discusses film genres. It defines a film genre as a structure of story that is often repeated with similar settings, characters, conflicts and values. Genres are derived from a film's setting, theme, mood or format and help classify films. Genres are initially developed from successful films that studios then emulate. Repeated success establishes conventions that audiences expect, ensuring future audience interest. Genres give directors templates and audiences expectations about what a film will contain. Historical instances like the 1938 FD&C Act and the Generic Drug Scandals underscore how crisis-triggered reforms often fail to address the fundamental issues, perpetuating inefficiencies and hazards.
The narrative advocates a shift from reactive crisis management to proactive, adaptable systems prioritizing continuous enhancement. Key hurdles involve challenging outdated assumptions regarding bioavailability, inadequately funded research ventures, and the impact of vague language in regulatory frameworks.
The rise of large language models (LLMs) presents promising solutions, albeit with accompanying risks necessitating thorough validation and seamless integration.
Tackling these blind spots demands a holistic approach, embracing adaptive learning and a steadfast commitment to self-improvement. By nurturing curiosity, refining regulatory terminology, and judiciously harnessing new technologies, the pharmaceutical sector can progress towards better public health service delivery and ensure the safety, efficacy, and real-world impact of drug products.
