- 2. What is Editing? Editing is the process of selecting and preparing language, images, sound, video or film through processes of correction, condensation, organisation and other modifications in various media. A person who edits is called an editor. All media texts are edited in some way. We can consider film/video editing (AKA ‘cutting’) under 3 headings: Pace, Transitions & Order. - 3. Video Editing: Pace We look at the pace of the editing – how quickly does it change from one clip to another? To do this we need learn to notice when edits occur, these are usually intended to go unnoticed. - 4. Video Editing We also consider how we change from one clip to another. These are known as transitions. Types of transitions: •Cut (most basic and common) •Fade In/Out •Cross Dissolve •Wipe •Etc. - 5. Video editing: Order When discussing editing we can talk about the order of clips; how are they arranged in relation to each other? Does the order of clips create a smooth flow or is it used to create contrast and juxtaposition?
- 6. Continuity Editing vs Montage Editing These are the two main forms of editing, categorised by how they order their clips. Continuity editing is the predominant style of editing in narrative cinema and television. The purpose of continuity editing is to smooth over the inherent discontinuity of the editing process and to establish a logical coherence between shots. Good continuity editing should be ‘invisible’ – we do not notice it happening. Film editors use a range of technical codes to disguise their edits and create an invisible flow.

Montage is a technique in film editing in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time, and information.
