The Atacama Desert spans Chile and Peru and is home to various cacti, baobab trees, and welwitschia plants. Animals that live there include ants, spiders, scorpions, foxes, jerboas, snakes, lizards, owls, desert cats, and tortoises. Indigenous people also live in the Atacama Desert, and scientists believe it has not rained there for over 400 years. Desert foxes that inhabit the area are nocturnal mammals that live in dens and eat worms, spiders, and grapes, seeking shade during the day to stay cool.
